About Us
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory has nearly 8,000 employees working at primary locations in Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina, and Idaho. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory also has an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations around the globe. Several entry level positions are available that offer unique opportunities to perform structural evaluations of complex reactor components in support of current and next generation of naval nuclear propulsion plants.
There is a large variety of analyses performed on our hardware including static, dynamic and fracture mechanics evaluation, which provides learning opportunities. Analyses are performed using commercial codes, such as ABAQUS, in-house developed codes, and hand calculations. There is a mix of long-term projects and quick turn-around tasks. The successful candidate will have ownership of their analyses and the necessary interactions with stakeholders.
A knowledgeable staff is available for mentoring, training, and guidance for new and developing engineers. Through tackling exciting and challenging diverse potential work assignments and a strong mentoring culture, NNL engineers have opportunity to continue gaining technical skills and broadening their experience throughout their careers.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university required.
Preferred Skills
• Ability to work on or lead a team
• Experience with ABAQUS; Thermal/Structural analysis experience
• Experience with design drawings and/or manufacturing processes
• Strong communication skills – verbal and written
• Previous co-op or intern experience.

Pay Range
$64,500 – $96,700 frequency

Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
