Why does the job exist?
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Newsletter Editor and Translator is responsible for producing numerous publications and print materials to keep our customers apprised and educate them on the Department’s rules and regulations, mission, programs, goals and objectives and state laws related to wildlife conservation. This position is essential in producing documents in Spanish and English to expand effective outreach with constituents. This position is vital to producing the content and providing the information generations of hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts expect and rely on. The Editor and Translator reports to the Communications Director within the Department’s Information and Education Division.
How does it get done?
1. Publications and Media ¿ The incumbent will support the Department’s public information efforts to convey the Department’s mission, programs, goals and objectives by disseminating information to, and conducting activities with, diverse external and internal customers through the use of various communication methods. Incumbent will write, edit, design, record and produce publications in both English and Spanish, in addition to providing English-to-Spanish translation. Publications can include the Department’s monthly wildlife newsletter, special edition newsletters, social media posts, podcasts, live and recorded video products, the Department’s annual reports and other Department publications on strict deadlines. The incumbent will also assist in researching, writing, editing and distributing news releases, consistent with AP style, to keep our customers apprised of the Department’s news. The successful candidate may also participate in public and media interviews in both English and Spanish.
2. Editorial Content ¿ Incumbent will be required to write, edit and ensure AP standards in grammar and style are followed. The incumbent is required to utilize technical skills and knowledge in design software programs such as Adobe Creative Suite; InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel.
3. Outreach ¿ The incumbent will participate in and assist with department outreach activities, education programs, fairs, trade shows, commission meetings, professional meetings and a wide variety of wildlife conservation programs to help document the department’s efforts through written work, photography and videography.
Who are the customers?
The purpose of this position is to inform citizens of the services and opportunities offered by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and to promote the values of hunting, fishing, outdoor recreation and wildlife conservation through printed publications, news releases, photography, interviews and other educational and personal interactions with the public in both English and Spanish. The incumbent provides professional copy-editing skills, utilizing Associated Press standards in grammar and style, on the execution of all work and will use various communication methods, including but not limited to: TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, electronic media, social media, press releases, media interviews, trade shows, events and educational outreach to provide public relations support.
Ideal Candidate

– knowledge of hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation, wildlife conservation and wildlife biology.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in any field and two (2) years of experience in print media publishing to include writing and/or editing. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work will be performed primarily in an office setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions and in close proximity to live and deceased fish and wildlife. Extensive use of Mac computer and telephones. Late evening, early morning, weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Must be able to lift 60 pounds and operate computers and photography equipment.
