Responsibilities*
The School of Nursing is seeking an experienced Communications Specialist that has exceptional skills as a strategic thinker; is innovative, organized, and self-motivated; and has a keen interest in driving strategic messages to key internal and external audiences. The primary responsibility is promoting a positive image of the School, to foster recruitment and retention of students and faculty; and promote collaborations with practice partners, alumni, and friends of the school. This includes marketing all nursing programs (undergraduate, RN to BSN, and graduate) through specialized outreach, coordinating and managing recruitment communications that include both electronic and print advertising, strategic communication and cultivating professional contacts. The responsibilities include developing, implementing and administering student recruitment and retention strategies for the school, in addition to the monitoring of enrollment trends and yields. This position reports to the Dean of the UM-Flint School of Nursing.
- Engages with intention to understand nursing as a profession and nursing’s national agenda for contributing to a culture of health through interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Develops and manages the implementation of an integrated marketing plan and branding efforts for the school
- Serves as consultant and project manager for recruitment efforts
- Facilitates information sessions and makes presentations to increase the School’s marketability
- Participates in strategic planning for the school and serves as a strategic resource/consultant related to community needs assessment, enrollment growth, target areas of emphasis for program planning
- Acts as a consultant to school’s leadership, staff, and faculty regarding communication initiatives and opportunities
- Contributes to development of external relations and community partnerships; and to advancement of related initiatives
- Participates in the development of effective pathway initiatives with local high schools, with emphasis on promoting diversity and addressing systemic inequities in education and healthcare.
- Promotes/supports effective community engagement initiatives including continuing education events
- Identifies and promotes resources for students, faculty and staff to share in recruitment efforts
- Develops content, manages maintenance, and optimizes effectiveness of School websites and social media efforts
- Collaborates with communications and marketing leadership within the university
- Develops and edits content for stories, news releases, proposals, and executive summaries
- Conducts marketing research and data analytics as needed; monitor metrics to evaluate effectiveness of recruitment efforts.
Required Qualifications*
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or relevant field.
- 3 or more years of relevant professional experience in Marketing, Communications or related field that is directly relevant to the job responsibilities of this position
- Ability to interact with faculty, staff, and students (current and prospective) in a positive, respectful manner; be a team player
- Skill in external relations, to include interaction with prospective faculty, practice partners, community partners, alumni, and donors.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and employ basic reasoning skills in responding to inquiries
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple project deadlines simultaneously.
- Experience with various software programs and the willingness to learn new programs as required
- Experience developing and maintaining strategic plans, branding, websites and online presence
- Knowledge and understanding of social media platforms used in recruiting and marketing: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or relevant field.
Work Schedule
Hybrid: A consistent hybrid work schedule (some days on campus and some days working remotely) is available for this position at this time. However, this is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.
