Position Summary

The Town of Breckenridge Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and customer service oriented individual for the position of Non-Certified Ice Hockey Official. This position is responsible for assisting in the creation & implementation of various programs and services to guests of the Recreation Department. Primary responsibilities include the design, development and/or creation of programs or services, and instruction of skills related to the various programs or services. Implementation of programs and services involves setting up and preparing assigned facility space and equipment, performing light maintenance duties, registration, handling cash, interfacing with participants, coaching, instructing, officiating, scheduling, enforcing department policies and procedures, ensuring safety, and collecting evaluations and patron feedback.

Individuals in this position are responsible for officiating adult ice hockey games for the Town of Breckenridge at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. Hockey Officials are responsible for ensuring the safety of players and participants by calling penalties and violations in a timely manner and in accordance to USA Hockey and Town of Breckenridge Adult Hockey League rules; conducting physical inspection of the ice surface, goals, nets, timing and scoring device and surrounding areas to ensure equipment is in safe operating condition; and reviewing score sheets/making recommendations for player discipline based on game infractions. Officials monitor behavior, play and actions of players before, on-ice/during and after the game to maintain safety values, hockey rules, sportsmanship and general protocol. Officials must intercede in player/official, player/player and player/spectator disputes and activities on the ice, in the arena and on Stephen C. West Ice Arena premises appropriately, professionally, timely and by using the tools and mechanics of hockey refereeing. Rules of play are overseen and/or enforced in a manner reflecting positively on the sport, the ice facility and the Town of Breckenridge hockey programs. Additionally, key responsibilities include imparting customer service in a responsible, service-oriented manner that supports a culture of safety, where an emphasis on risk management is communicated and contributes positively to the customer experience.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess excellent ice skating skills.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of USA Hockey rules via work history and/or playing experience.
  • Must have one (1) or more years of customer service experience.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a tactful, professional manner while communicating effectively and courteously.
  • To qualify for this position the candidate or employee must pass a criminal background check as described in the Recreation Department Criminal History Background Check & Confidentiality Policy.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

  • Basic CPR, AED, and First Aid Certifications required within 60 day of hire

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One (1) or more years of ice hockey officiating experience.
  • One (1) or more years of customer service experience involving youth/adult hockey programs.
  • One (1) or more years experience playing hockey at the high school or club level.

Additional Information
Typical Hiring Pay Range: $20.50 – $21.75 per hour.

Because the Town’s Recreation Department positions may involve direct contact with children, the Town requires that the incumbent in this position must have a clear criminal history that bears on his or her fitness to have responsibility for the safety and well-being of children.

WORK SCHEDULE
Primary shifts for this position generally include Sunday – Friday evenings, from 5:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (schedule varies). Individuals in this position must be flexible in terms of availability, and may on occasion be required to work other shifts as needed, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
