Health IT is seeking four full-time Nurse Informaticists to join our Epic Project Team (EHR Application Portfolio). The Nurse Informaticists shall act as liaisons between various stakeholders that will include San Mateo County Health (SMCH) Leadership, front line staff, vendors end users, members, and the Epic Project Team. These individuals will work with administrative staff, healthcare providers and physicians to implement and optimize the usage of Epic through education and training, providing support in accordance with project goals. The incumbents will not have direct patient care clinical duties, however, will be responsible for gathering and introducing changes needed and be the liaison for making those changes, educating, and preparing stakeholders and users. The Nurse Informaticist will be part of that critical “bridge” that connects the workflow of clinical and non-clinical staff who provide direct care and services with the technology and information; to support improved patient care/services, access, patient safety and quality outcomes.
The Nurse Informaticists will be located in South San Francisco or San Mateo, CA, but may travel/drive throughout the county to perform duties of the job. These positions are currently hybrid positions with both on-site and remote work. The Nurse Informaticists will report directly to the Assistant Chief Information Office, Health IT.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join our team at the beginning of the Epic project! San Mateo County Health is very excited to be embarking on our Epic implementation journey that will transform care and service delivery for our patients and clients! This enhanced model of care is centered on health information being readily available. Therefore, we are beginning the recruitment process for our Epic project team.
Some employees hired for this implementation will receive training to attain required Epic module certification, as applicable and needed. Training is targeted to begin in August 2023 and will likely include out of state travel. Some incumbents will be expected to pass Epic examinations to receive certification in various modules.
The Health IT Division exists to guide the Health Department from great ideas to outstanding IT solutions that support our mission of promoting the health and longevity of the residents of San Mateo County.
The ideal candidates:
- Strong, recent, relevant experience working with stakeholders in adopting Epic or another EHR as part of a large project implementation that involved multiple EHR’s that were being replaced by a single EHR.
- Have a minimum of 5 years of recent work experience in a healthcare setting with a preference to working in Government (Federal, State, County) healthcare entities.
- Will have solid technical understanding and background, broad expertise in nursing practice and clinical workflows, and strong organizational skills.
- Have strong, recent competency in mapping real-life practices to applications.
- Are adept at persuading and training clinical and non-clinical stakeholders to adopt new workflows and tools, requiring strong knowledge of change management.
- Have knowledge of adult learning and training methods.
- Will have a solid technical understanding and background, broad expertise in nursing practice and clinical workflows, and strong organizational skills.
- Have broad knowledge of healthcare operations and associate technologies.
- Have excellent ability to translate technical terminology for consumption by non-technical audiences.
- Have good familiarity with project management, quality assurance, and information systems design, and EHR application build.
- Have awareness of current IT security standards, applicable privacy laws and regulations.
- Have effective written, oral, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Are self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
- Have analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Have a customer-service and patient-centric focus.
- Have certifications in Epic, ANCC or Nursing Informatics.
- Masters Degree in Nursing or related (MHA, MBA, etc.)

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Support numerous departments with their Epic EMR applications.
- Rely on conceptual knowledge and problem-solving skills to perform assignments and improve efficiencies within existing applications.
- Coordinate application support with other information technology teams including Infrastructure, Integration, Reporting, and the help desk.
- Assess technologies and workflows by evaluating feasibility, design, usability, and employing implementation best practices.
- Assist physicians, nurses, and other clinicians with issue resolution related to the electronic health record (EHR) and other clinical applications.
- Direct observation and participation in design-build sessions/interdisciplinary workgroups, partnership with stakeholders from the Executive to front line staff throughout San Mateo County Health.
- Risk and workflow analysis that may indicate a negative impact on patient care/services, patient safety, or patient outcomes.
- Conduct formal classroom instruction in the more difficult or complex areas of nursing workflows.
- Serve as role model and resource person for staff and members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Assist with policy development.

Qualifications
Licensure/Certification:
- A California license as a Registered Nurse or ability to obtain licensure in California within six months from hire .
