Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative full-time Nursing Instructor – Clinical Lab Skills who is active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position.

Reporting to the Director of Nursing Programs and Dean of Workforce Education the Nursing Instructor will demonstrate they have actively experimented or are professionally interested in interventions and strategies designed to close the achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a record as a successful instructor who demonstrates the strong promise becoming a contributing member of the Workforce Education Division.
Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Nursing Instructor – Clinical Lab Skills, who is committed to community college students and their success. Essential Tasks
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree* in nursing, or approval by the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission confirming ability to complete Master’s degree in nursing on a defined timeline;

OR
A bachelor’s degree* in nursing and a Master’s degree in a health or education related field

  • At least 3 years nursing practice experience and current clinical nursing practice
  • Eligibility for vocational certification in the State of Washington
  • Active, unencumbered Washington state registered nurse license
  • Valid Washington state driver’s license

*Degrees must be from an accredited college or university and from a nursing education program that is accredited by a nursing education accreditation body recognized by the United States Department of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate degree* in nursing.
  • Experience teaching nurses or nursing students including teaching adults.
  • Experience teaching at a community or technical college.
  • Experience developing curriculum to meet industry standards.
  • Clinical specialty in medical/surgical or long -term care nursing.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Current knowledge of nursing practice at the associate level

  • Academic and career advising principles
  • Accredited Nursing program requirements (ACEN)

ABILITY TO:

  • Communicate knowledge and skills in both oral and written form with students who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, education, and cultural backgrounds
  • Successfully collaborate with peers to ensure content builds throughout the cohort program.
  • Ensure curriculum meets Nursing Accreditation standards, including appropriate preparation for NCLEX exams.
  • Work/teach alternate hours/schedule.
  • Implement curriculum and deliver instruction in multiple modes of instruction (on-line, hybrid, and face-to-face).
  • Adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population.
  • Organize, coordinate, teach and test students across the program in the basic skills lab and assist in the Simulation lab as directed.
  • As needed or assigned, travel to clinical practicum sites to work with clinical students.
  • Use educational technologies effectively, including high fidelity simulation mannequins.
  • Work collaboratively with simulation instructor on curriculum development, lab access, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, community partners, and individuals of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in a multicultural setting.
  • Meet deadlines within the institution and course structure, such as timely grading and student feedback, committee work, other requests for information and participation.
  • Create a collegial working environment.

Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach primarily in skills lab and simulation lab as assigned. May also teach in classroom and clinical practicum. Teaching may involve online delivery.
  • With guidance from the Nursing Director and lead nursing faculty, develop quarterly lab schedules.
  • Develop, organize and update lessons plans for skills taught in skills lab that are evidence-based.
  • Assist faculty in writing up and organizing lessons/scenarios as necessary.
  • As directed by lead nursing faculty, teach students skills, supervise practice and test on skills.
  • Set up and clean up for each lesson taught.
  • Maintain skills lab, organize and inventory supplies, assist with laundry responsibilities, assist with mannequin maintenance.
  • Coordinate with program assistant to order lab supplies quarterly and or annually.
  • As necessary, work with Simulation Instructor to ensure that high fidelity mannequins are kept in working order.
  • As directed, collaborate with Lead Faculty and Nurse Manager of the clinical unit to ensure a quality clinical practicum experience for students.
  • As directed, travel to clinical practicum sites to work with clinical students
  • Assist efforts and implement strategies to increase student success in Nursing, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups.
  • Build relationships in Nursing industry/clinical settings that result in high-quality partnerships and co-op/internship placements.
  • Engage in assessment activities to meet the requirements of the College, program, and course-level student evaluation.
  • Use a variety of teaching methodologies, including technology tools effectively.
  • In partnership with the Nursing faculty team update curriculum as required by the institution or industry trends and to meet accreditation standards for Nursing.
  • Evaluate course effectiveness and gather data for accreditation reports.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate departmental curriculum based on changes and updates at state and national levels.
  • Follow developed criteria for the selection and evaluation of clinical and practice experiences in clinical facilities which address safety and the need for students to achieve program outcomes and course objectives.
  • Assist with coordination of departmental programs including awarded grants, State or Federal funding, and/or special projects.
  • Continually upgrade knowledge and skills in the nursing field in order to maintain relevant curriculum.
  • Work effectively with administration, supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students as part of an education team.
  • Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery and evaluation of courses
  • Teach to a variety of learning styles as demonstrated in the development of course materials and assessments of student learning.
  • Participate in the Guided Pathways advising model, advise prospective and currently enrolled Nursing students, participate in advising day and NSO, participate in campus committee work, course and curriculum planning, department meetings, and other assigned duties.
  • Maintain Professional Technical Educator certification which includes a professional development plan and may include maintenance of other certifications as required by program (per WAC 131-16-092 and 131-16-093).
