Mission and Culture
The Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) mission is to “Develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest.” The Division of Mining, Land & Water’s (DMLW) mission is to “provide for the appropriate use and management of Alaska’s state-owned land and water, aiming toward maximum use consistent with the public interest.”
One of the key functions of the DNR is to authorize the use of state lands if it is consistent with the public interest. This Office Assistant 3 will support the Southcentral Regional Land Office by serving as the main public-facing representative for the office. This position will also provide highly valued support by ensuring that the general office clerical tasks are completed.

Core Responsibilities
This position is responsible for establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with diverse groups of people by being the first to greet visitors to the office. The office assistant will be responsible for the clerical support of the office, including processing mail, maintaining office supplies, and directing phone calls. This position will also be trained to assist adjudicator staff on receiving, reviewing, and initiating various land use authorizations.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is in the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage, with an individual working space on the 9th floor. The core hours are from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Monday – Friday and currently requires a 7.5-hour daily work schedule, with an option for an alternate work-week schedule. The office is a positive atmosphere geared towards collaboration and teamwork. The office has a beautiful view of the Chugach Mountain Range and offers free parking. The Atwood building is near coffee shops, restaurants, shopping, the park strip, and the Coastal Trail system.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be successful in this position include

  • Experience establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with diverse groups of people including those whose interests at times are adversarial.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that clearly and concisely communicates the message to be conveyed to a broad spectrum of audiences.
  • Working knowledge of computer-based workstations and relevant business software.
  • Ability to organize, set priorities, plan, and direct workflow and procedures for recordkeeping, filing, and other clerical office systems.
  • Experience comprehending and interpreting written material and applying rules and instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience that includes clerical tasks such as performing reception duties, answering routine questions on services or products, retrieving information from electronic or hard copy files, recording expenditures and receipts, or typing routine correspondence.

Substitution:
Education from an accredited college may substitute for six months of the required experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education equal one month of experience).

Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a G.E.D.; 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years and includes basic clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

Some positions in this class may require the incumbent to operate motor vehicles. Such positions require that the applicant possess a regular driver’s license and be 18 years of age or older.

Some positions in this class may require skill in typing. Recruitment and selection may include this requirement.
