Mission and Culture
This position is housed in the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Mining, Land and Water (DMLW), Land Conveyance Section. The DNR mission is to “Develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest.” The DMLW mission is “To provide for the appropriate use and management of Alaska’s state-owned land and water, aiming toward maximum use consistent with the public interest.”
Core Responsibilities
This multi-purpose administrative position assists the Land Conveyance Manager and the Land Conveyance Section, Appraisal Section, and Contract Initiation and Revenue Recovery Section in managing state land conveyances for DMLW. The office assistant is responsible for the clerical support of the sections and is responsible for answering phones, greeting and directing customers, document collection and distribution, and file storage maintenance. In addition, this position does data entry, mail distribution, supply procurement, and handles customer payments.

The section is structured with opportunities for training, flexible schedules, and support. This position also supports the Appraisal Section and the Contract Initiation and Revenue Recovery Section for parallel duties as needed.
The Working Environment You Can Expect
Located on the sixth floor of the Atwood Building in beautiful downtown Anchorage, this position has a reception-style cubicle, with a standing station, in an open office setting. Covered, free parking is provided, giving easy access to all that downtown Anchorage has to offer.
To be successful in this position, the candidate will need the following core competencies.
- Clerical: Applies knowledge of clerical equipment and software, processes, techniques, and professional standards to complete routine office work to generally accepted professional standards. Completes work independently with minimal supervision. Uses skills and abilities to complete tasks consisting of many different and connected parts, including deciding which processes to use.

- Customer Service: Interacts with recipients of services (internal or external customers) in a way that provides accurate, timely, and effective information and service in a courteous and professional manner.
- Attention to Detail: Sees and pays attention to details; recognizes the component parts of a procedure or object and can verify correctness or error in an individual part or procedure.
- Oral Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds accordingly.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience that includes clerical tasks such as performing reception duties, answering routine questions on services or products, retrieving information from electronic or hard copy files, recording expenditures and receipts, or typing routine correspondence.
Substitution:
Education from an accredited college may substitute for six months of the required experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education equal one month of experience).
Special Note:
“High school diploma equivalent” means one of the following: 1) a G.E.D.; 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years and includes basic clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.
Some positions in this class may require the incumbent to operate motor vehicles. Such positions require that the applicant possess a regular driver’s license and be 18 years of age or older.
Some positions in this class may require skill in typing. Recruitment and selection may include this requirement.
