Portland’5 manages the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Keller Auditorium and Antoinette Hatfield Hall in downtown Portland, Oregon. As an it is essential you are able to provide a welcoming space at our performing arts centers. Under the supervision of the Facility Manager and Lead Operating Engineer, the Operating Engineer II operates and maintains all heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical and mechanical equipment used in the daily operations of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts (Portland’5) facilities.

As an Operating Engineer II you will:

  • Perform repair and maintenance of:
    • Air conditioning and refrigeration systems
    • Boilers and heating systems
    • Pumps, couplings and associated motors
    • Electrical systems
    • Door pneumatic controls
    • HVAC DDC and computer controls
    • Kitchen and concession equipment
    • Windows, doors, door closers, door locks and latches
    • Lighting fixtures, interior and exterior
    • Building envelope (exterior doors, windows, etc.)
  • Repair and replace plumbing fixtures; clean drains
  • Operate HVAC controls and control computers for daily facility needs as well as for shows and events as needed
  • Handle on-call duty, one month at a time, rotated among staff Engineers
  • Interface regularly with outside contractors who perform various regular maintenance and repair functions
  • Cut keys and provides related services
  • Solder and braze copper
  • Weld various materials with various methods – i.e.: stick, wire, TIG, MIG
  • Perform basic carpentry and make repairs to wood features and furnishings
  • Perform some duties associated with network infrastructure needs such as; pulling and finding data cables, building and maintaining data patch fields, helping to manage Enterprise WiFi and telephone equipment and similar items
  • Assist with some event setups that require temporary power hookups, telephone and network connections, etc.

Attributes for success:

  • Experience with operation and maintenance of low-pressure and condensing boilers, centrifugal and modular scroll chillers, open and closed loop cooling towers
  • Controls: electrical, mechanical and DDC
  • Ability to maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures
  • Ability to maintenance and repair of doors, door closers, windows, latches and locksets
  • Experience to weld metal with various types of welding setups
  • Work in elevated locations as well as from aerial lifts such as Genie lifts, scissor lifts and similar equipment
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public
  • Work independently, with other engineers, employees, and the general public
  • Work smoothly with outside repair and maintenance contractors in various disciplines
  • Understand of reading drawings and diagrams such as schematics, one-line diagrams, building mechanical, fire protection and floor plans
  • Reading and following written and oral instructions
  • Write clear, descriptive and understandable daily shift reports
  • Enter data into, and follow work orders generated by, facility CMMS software
  • Perform tasks that occasionally require heavy lifting, moving, etc.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Two years of experience as an Operating Engineer in a large public events facility, OR
  • We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position

Required:

  • Required must possess an Oregon Limited Maintenance Electrician License (LME)
  • Required possession of a valid driver’s license. The candidate selected for the position will need to pass a Driving Record check prior to being hired. Speeding tickets do not necessarily preclude employment and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis
  • Must be, or be willing to become, CPR and First Aid certified
  • Able to work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays when required

  • Forklift Operator Certificate
  • Fall Protection Competent Person Certificate
  • Lock Technician or Locksmith Certificate
  • Network Infrastructure Certificate or Knowledge of basic TCP/IP networking hardware and physical infrastructure
  • OSHA-10 or OSHA-30 certificate

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Beginning wage is $38.19 an hour. An employee achieves full rate $40.01 after successful completion of 6-month probationary period.
