The entry-level knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform job duties are: A bachelor’s of science degree and two years’ experience working in a fishing industry or environmental science/ecological field.

Knowledge of: offshore fishing and field research techniques; experience with sampling methods, data collection procedures, and data analysis. Skill in: the identification of saltwater fish occurring in the Gulf of Mexico; the basic use of marine navigation and electronics equipment; organizational and communication skills, especially communicating effectively and diplomatically with stakeholders, peers and scientific groups; use of personal computers, including Microsoft office, database, mapping and analytical software. Ability to: maintain a valid driver’s license; participate in heavy physical exertion over extended periods and over consecutive work days; flex work hours to accommodate long work hours; participate in potentially extreme field conditions including rough seas and harsh temperatures; think logically and apply problem-solving techniques; and establish and maintain effective working relationships as a team member to accomplish project goals.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work at FWC is cross-functional meaning duties may cross division/office lines. The Commission expects employees to function across FWC’s organizational structure by providing their skills and expertise wherever needed through work on teams or as directed.

This position participates as field/laboratory technician for multiple field studies on fish species supporting commercial and /or recreational fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Keys, working closely with the rest of the Movement Ecology and Reproductive Resilience team. Duties will include collecting data following defined procedures; field work with commercial and charter captains to collect data and biological samples both dockside and on the water; captaining FWRI research vessels up to 28ft in length for distances up to 50 miles from shore; laboratory work including maintenance of sampling equipment, removal and processing of otoliths and tissues for assessing important life history traits in fishes; analyzing and recording fish identification data from underwater video; analyzing sound files for spawning sounds and boat signals; entering, proofing, correcting, and archiving data using database software; analyzing data and preparing reports, data summaries, and possibly peer-reviewed manuscripts. Position is based in Saint Petersburg and will require offshore field work year round, typically 4-6 one-day trips (10-15 hour days) monthly, on FWRI and offshore charter vessels departing from the Tampa Bay and Tarpon Springs area. This position is funded by a multi-year grant with an expected Project End Date: 8/30/2024.
