Job Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties of the position will be deploying camera trap arrays at sites throughout the Florida panhandle and north central Florida. Position will also assist with surveys using a scat detection dog. The results of this study will be used to determine best monitoring protocols for long-tailed weasels and spotted skunks in Florida. Duties include working independently or with other staff members to place camera traps using a variety of baits and lures, processing and tagging images, completing vegetations surveys at camera sites, assisting with surveys for scat with a detection dog as an orienteer, and contacting landowners and land managers to request property access. Additional duties may include data entry, assisting with annual reports, maintaining equipment, and scheduling surveys and coordinating equipment transfer.
The position is expected to last from late-September 2023 to the end of March 2024. Location in north Florida is flexible. Optional field housing is provided in a camper. This is a 40 hour per week position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Applicants should possess a B.S. degree, preferably in wildlife biology or similar field, and should have experience working as a field biologist. Must be able to carry-out extensive field work in difficult terrain and hot and humid field conditions, including walking through dense and shrubby vegetation with biting insects for extended periods of time. Experience with game cameras and photo management preferred. Knowledge of Florida mammals, conservation, and species identification is preferred. Experience with MS Excel or Access, GPS, and database management also is preferred. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills, and be able to work independently in a remote location, and cooperatively with diverse colleagues, partners, landowners, and citizens.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences.
This position requires the candidate to have successful completion of a level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate prior to hire.
