Job Description:
As LibraryPress@UF Design & Publishing Assistant, you will gain valuable experience through an internship focused on a publishing imprint of the George A. Smathers Libraries and University of Florida Press ( http://librarypress.domains.uflib.ufl.edu ). Reporting to the Publications Design Manager within the Libraries’ Digital Partnerships & Strategies department, you will assist in the creation, development, and execution of various LP@UF projects. You will support aspects of design and production tasks to develop products such as books, magazines, catalogues, brand boards, promotional design, and overall visual aesthetic of our brand. You will gain a behind-the-scenes perspective on library publishing from brainstorming to design to final product. You will have an opportunity to collaborate within a supportive team environment and will be named as a contributor to every project you work on with LP@UF.

Hours: 15-20 hours/week
Location: Remote work is possible
Term: October 2023-May 2024, with possibility of extension to August 2024
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with LP@UF Publications Design Manager to brainstorm, ideate, and create unique professional and innovative designs for new design projects.
- Provide keen editing skills for spelling, grammar and design consistency.
- Assist in getting production designs print ready for University of Florida Press and external vendors.
- Prepare images for publication, including formatting, citation, permissions, and accessibility-related information.
- Learn about design trends to contribute to the design process, including project brand boards and style guide.
- Assist in creating presentations and visual materials for internal and external stakeholders.
- Create promotional materials, including blog posts and social media content.
- As feasible, photograph collections, people, and environments to support design projects.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and compassionate team environment, fostering creativity and open communication.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional team members, such as Communications, dLOC, and UPF, to ensure design projects are aligned with overall brand objectives and timelines.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with staff, faculty, students, and partners.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and other academic institutions and publishers, design techniques, and software advancements to continuously enhance design skills and knowledge.
Expected Salary:
$22 per hour
Minimum Requirements:
- At least 1 year of design experience, which may include academic coursework.
- Proficiency in design software including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365, including Word and PowerPoint.
- Strong visual and conceptual design skills, with a keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
- Knowledge of current design trends, color theory, typography, and layout principles.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate ideas and receive feedback constructively.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with a strong sense of initiative and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability to evolving project requirements and changing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Those enrolled in graduate programs or seeking early career professional development are especially encouraged to apply.
- Working knowledge of web content management systems such as WordPress.
- Experience with photography.
- Background in designing for accessibility and inclusion in reference to images, colors, fonts, and layout.
