This position works with Fish & Wildlife Research Institute’s communications team in St. Petersburg and requires considerable initiative and independent judgement with the ability to work with or without close supervision or direction, while maintaining a collaborative team approach.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to manage projects and effectively communicate, excellent writing skills and fluent in AP style; excellent customer service skills, ability to take complex subjects and translate them into plain language for a general audience; skill public relations, presentations; and interpersonal communication. Fluency in using MS 365 software (Outlook, Word, MS Teams), familiarity with social media platforms, Adobe Acrobat, photography, videography, and basic knowledge of Florida’s fish and wildlife and interest in fish and wildlife research; ability to lift 50 pounds; flexible and adaptable to changing and competing priorities, and maintain equipment (cameras, phones, laptop).

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in journalism, public relations, mass communications, English, natural sciences. Must pass a Level 2 background check. Valid driver’s license.

Job Description: This position will serve as the Communications Coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, a division of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. You will draft copy, edit and distribute internal and external newsletters, coordinate with research staff and translate technical research information into plain, engaging and easy to understand language. Assist with content development and provide customer service for social media channels, create reports for annual, quarterly benchmarking. Upload, organize and maintain internal SharePoint. Coordinate with other agency staff at all levels to create and disseminate key messages. Assist with photography and videography, press conferences,and tours as needed to raise awareness of FWRI’s work and facilitate public engagement. Assist with preparation of materials for posting to the FWC website, including reviewing, and altering items such as images and PDF documents to ensure they meet accessibility requirements. Assist with display planning and coordination for FWRI’s annual open house. Answer public inquiries, respond to information requests, public records requests and ASK FWC, Tracker requests, administrative duties include budget tracking, purchasing, and other duties as assigned.
