Overview

Under direction, performs skilled painting of buildings, furniture, and facilities; performs other skilled and semi-skilled building maintenance and repair duties. Incumbents in this class may routinely perform building maintenance and repair duties not related to painting, such as carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

This role will pay a wage of $27.42.

Responsibilities

  • Mixes and matches paint; prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sanding, and filling nail holes and cracks; rigs scaffolding; applies paint with brush, roller, and spray equipment; uses paint, varnishes, enamels, and stains for building interiors and exteriors, furniture, concrete, and other materials; cleans brushes and other equipment used; may do simple lettering and sign painting.
  • May perform a variety of building maintenance and repair duties, such as: building and installing cabinets and shelves, repairing furniture, replacing switches, repairing faucets, and pouring and finishing concrete.
  • Estimates time and materials needed, and records time and materials used, depending on assignment.
  • Maintains inventory of paint and supplies.
  • Record and log all work performed, complete work order slips and compile all required reports in a timely and complete manner.
  • Assists other areas on an as-needed basis.
  • Promote a safe working environment for all employees by following the life safety and emergency program as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

One year of skilled painting experience; or, two years of experience performing semi-skilled painting work, or, a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of tools and methods of painting; rigging and scaffolding; repair methods and maintenance practices for structures, furnishings, and equipment; arithmetic sufficient to calculate time, labor, and quantities of materials needed; work safety practices.

Ability to: mix and match paint and select harmonizing colors; work with limited supervision; follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; plan, organize, assign, and review work; explain and demonstrate painting methods to others.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Basic computer skills required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid driver’s license is required.

While performing the responsibilities of the Painter, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is constantly required to exert various types of physical exertion, such as prolonged reaching, bending, kneeling, and lifting. The vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The Painter works in indoor and outdoor work settings with mild to adverse exposure to environmental hazards. The incumbent must be able to climb stairs and ladders and walk long distances to access all areas of the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually mild to loud. Incumbents in this position work in varying settings and will be subject to noise and atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odor, dust, etc.
