As a Paralegal on the IP team, you will assist the VP, IP N. America with a wide variety of IP matters relating to the commercialization of Sandoz products. This role is responsible for independently providing a high quality and diverse range of support to the U.S. IP team on IP litigation and business development (BD) activities, with attorney supervision as appropriate. This role undertakes operational and strategic responsibilities to maximize the effectiveness of Paralegal services and support within the IP function at a local and global level.

Your responsibilities include, but not limited to:
• Proactively and autonomously supports in-house patent litigation counsel and other legal professionals through all stages of US IP litigation matters, including interacting with external counsel and Global functional colleagues.
• Proactively and autonomously supports in-house attorneys and other legal professionals on all aspects of Company’s BD activities, including collaborating with BD colleagues.
• Contribute to projects relating to IP litigation and BD processes/operations, driving the successful implementation of new and revised processes and guidelines. Develop, coordinate and successfully implement various projects to support legal/IP and business unit goals and objectives.
• Litigation database document and information management and updating internal knowledge databases to record and report litigation events, updates and outcomes (e.g. Memotech, OneNote, SharePoint). Familiarity with patent and litigation databases (e.g. PatBase, Espacenet, PACER, etc).
• Communicate with internal stakeholders and external counsel on various IP litigation and BD issues. Work with the in-house paralegal team to assist in managing the patent litigation budgeting process, including working with colleagues on the finance team. Work with the discovery team in disclosure exercises and litigation holds; assisting in review of disclosure documents, where necessary. Work with General Legal and other general legal paralegals on key department projects to support Legal function.
• Prepare for and attend meetings with internal stakeholders and external counsel (including agenda management, minute taking and follow up, at lead attorney’s instruction). Prepare Terms of Engagement with legal vendors. Contribute to the procurement of specialist IP services. Perform research as requested using computer and printed resources.
• Analyze and adapt processes in order to improve efficiency and identify administrative processes and/or procedures in need of review and revision to ensure efficient and effective use of resources.
• Assist in the preparation of draft analytical litigation and BD documents e.g. status reports and updates, legal research, and assistance with disclosure. Review, draft, amend and handle execution of standard patent and legal documents such as Powers of Attorney, settlement agreements, and notice letters.

This opportunity is located at the Sandoz Princeton, NJ site. Preference will be given to local candidates not requiring relocation.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $84,000 and $126,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Role Requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree with relevant work experience required.
• Minimum 5+ years paralegal experience in law firm or Corporate IP department. Experience in Pharmaceutical company is preferred, but not required.
• Strong understanding and use of paralegal concepts and principles.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Proven ability to:
– Understand the pharmaceutical commercialization process and regulatory structure and the legal concepts associated with specific legal needs.
– Comprehend, analyze, and digest legal opinions, legislation, regulations, and legal publications.
– Exercise initiative and sound judgment.
– Use legal terminology, prepare legal documents, and follow legal procedures.
– Locate and identify legal opinions, court decisions, and legislation.
• Fluency in English required with excellent oral and written communication, organizational and communication skills. Strong attention to detail, with an ability to work independently and to maintain a high level of confidentiality and ethics.
• Knowledge of:
– Legal terminology.
– Records and files organization and use.
– Concepts of contract law.
