General Purpose
Under the general direction of the County Attorney, responsible for resolving routine legal issues; assists with documents for Inspections of Public Records (IPRA) requests; conducts research and analyzes issues to prepare legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, contracts, etc.; assists in coordinating and administering the daily operations of the County Attorney’s Office; provides administrative support to the County Attorney, Deputy County Attorney and Assistant County Attorney; and serves as administrative liaison between the County Attorney’s Office as directed. An incumbent in this job classification must demonstrate knowledge of / familiarity with a variety of the concepts, practices and procedures associated with the paralegal field and an ability to rely upon experience and sound judgement to plan and accomplish assigned goals.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s Degree in Applied Science, Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies or related field and five years paralegal experience OR a combination or related education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides complex administrative and paralegal support to attorneys and manages the administrative operations of the County Attorney’s Office.
  • Provides assistance and administrative support to the Ethics Board.
  • Resolves routine legal issues; conducts research and analyzes issues utilizing sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions and legal codes to prepare legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, contracts, etc.
  • Manages the department’s purchasing activities; monitors the department budget; manages office inventory and expenses.
  • Serves as liaison with county departments and outside agencies.
  • Reviews legal claims and documents served on the County; gathers information needed to defend claims.
  • Tracks documents and maintains case files and current list of pending cases; drafts legal correspondence and assists attorneys in research projects.
  • Responsible for tracking deadlines; coordinates attorneys’ schedules and court calendars.
  • Oversees and maintains the records management systems for case files and legal opinions.
  • Tracks documents submitted for review.
  • Coordinates the processing of garnishments with the Finance Department.
  • Ensures legal documents are filed with courts.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Position reports to the County Attorney.
