The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs. Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.
The Ohio Department of Health’s Bureau of Child and Family Health is seeking one (1) candidate to fill our available Parent Consultant role.
What You’ll Do:
- As parent of child with special health care needs, serves as parent consultant and provides consultation to programs throughout the Bureau of Child and Family Health (BCFH), Ohio Department of Health (ODH), and with individual parents of children with special health care needs, parent support groups and state and county agencies regarding the Children with Medical Handicaps (CMH) program and other programs.
- Provides parent perspective in all aspects of daily work.
- Provides additional program resources for which children and families may be eligible.
- Consults with CMH and other BCFH staff on issues faced by parents of children with special healthcare needs.
- Consults with administrators and other staff regarding family centered care and community issues.
- Visits local health departments, children’s hospitals and other community organizations and agencies to provide education concerning the CMH program and other ODH and state programs regarding children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN).
- Promotes Ohio’s CYSHCN program with other states and other state and local agencies involved with children and families.
- Interacts with parents regarding CMH appeals process.
- Serves as parent liaison with other programs and state agencies to ensure that parental perspectives are considered in the development and implementation of program activities.
- Engages with contractors, providers and subrecipients to provide technical assistance
regarding services for CYSHCN. - Serves on interagency workgroups addressing CYSHCN and coordinates and presents the parent
perspective on issues considered for policy development.

Additional Qualifications:
Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:
- Coursework in early childhood education, communications, customer service
- Experience working with Parent Advocacy Groups (e.g., BCFH/CMH PAC [Parent Advisory Committee], Voices for Children, Family and Children First Council), disease-specific organizations, hospital committees/councils
- Experience in assisting families to access services (medical /social)
- Experience in providing educational/informational trainings
- 12 months or more experience in public relations or customer service
- Experience in handling confidential information
- Experience using personal computer

Qualifications
- 2 years experience working with advocacy groups (e.g., Spina Bifida Coalition; Families For Acceptable Care & Treatment; Association for Retarded Citizens) concerned with special health care needs for children with medical handicaps;
- Must provide own transportation.
- Must be parent of child with special health care needs in accordance with Federal Maternal & Child Health Bureau block grant regulations.
