Description
The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation Northern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Park/General Maintenance Worker Leader- CDL to supervise the daily operations in one of our four areas of concentration: General Park Maintenance, Trail Management, Waste Management and Turf & Ballfield. These positions require experience in skilled park maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidates will perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, trash removal, athletic field maintenance, trail maintenance, cleaning and repairing park buildings, and snow removal by working in a team environment and leading work teams of career and/or intermittent employees. The ideal candidates should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, some trade skills in carpentry and painting, as well as, the ability to use mobile technology and computer software.

This position will be located at the Polk Street Maintenance Yard.
Examples of Important Duties

  • Coordinates and leads the day-to-day activities in assigned work areas. Plans, schedules, assigns and monitors the team members. Trains staff in equipment operation, assigned work program specifications and safety protocols and practices.
  • Plans work, estimates resources and materials needed. Recommends purchases and receives deliveries. Sets priorities for daily assignments. Performs inspections and uses mobile technology to enter information into the work order system (EAM).
  • Leads workers on minor construction projects. Operates riding mowers and tractors with attachments to cut parks, ballfields and brush.
  • Operates trucks, truck and trailer combinations, front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks with snow plows, and trash trucks, Operates complex equipment and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating requiring a CDL. Using trucks and heavy equipment removes snow, grades fields and other park areas, and hauls materials and equipment. Performs routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Occasionally performs routine custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
  • Maintains athletic fields, according to established standards. Lays out field (for example, measures, plots and squares corners, plots yard lines, and marks lines). Installs amenities associated with athletic fields. Aerates turf areas.
  • Installs amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fence (chain link and split rail) basketball rims & nets, tennis poles and nets, etc.
  • Performs tree maintenance duties. Operates chain saws. Operates chipping machine to grind brush into mulch. Operates stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
  • May inspects playground structures for compliance with established safety standards including inspections. Reports unsafe and hazardous conditions of play equipment. Under direction, constructs, installs, and repairs play equipment to ensure safety.
  • Monitors and provides assistance setting up special events and transporting stages requiring a CDL. Provides general assistance to park visitors. Assists in monitoring programs and events

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school graduate or GED, and five years of progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and park maintenance; or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Pass Commission medical examination.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
a. Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.

Work Hours are 5:45 am – 2:30 pmCommercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements is required within six months of employment.
This position may involve seasonal weekend work and seasonal work schedules adjustments.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of general park maintenance operations including turf management, playground maintenance, grounds maintenance, ballfield maintenance and basic trade’s skills.
  • Skilled in the operations of a wide variety of equipment including truck and trailer operations, tractors, mowers, skid steers, other heavy equipment and other power equipment.
  • Ability to lead staff in assigned operations with daily assignments, staff training and performance management.
  • Experience with mobile technology and ability to use basic computer skills. – Ability to meet the citizens to investigate complaints
