The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Southern Area Maintenance is seeking to fill a Park/General Maintenance Leader-CDL. The selected candidate will perform a variety park maintenance work involving grounds maintenance, greens keeping, landscaping, building maintenance, and safety procedures and practices.

The incumbent in this position performs general and some skilled parks maintenance work, involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety that involve general grounds keeping and routine building maintenance at Commission parks, recreation buildings, community centers and other developed areas. Incumbent will be regularly working as a lead person of a group but may be given independent work assignments on occasion and must have the ability to read and write. Duties may include but not limited to operation of medium to heavy trucks as well as trailers with weight capacity over 10,000lbs., trash collection, turf maintenance, ball field maintenance and snow removal. Also performs specialized assignments requiring training and experience.

Please note the above salary range represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for this position is $43,586 – $60,389. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Incumbent must have a CDL license at the time of hire or have the ability to obtain a CDL license within 6 months after being hired.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Provide leadership and coordination of landscaping team and work assignments
  • Perform skilled maintenance of landscape
  • Utilize a Commercial Driver’s License to perform park maintenance tasks.
  • Ensure staff is utilizing proper safety equipment.
  • Inspect finished work assignments to ensure they are of high quality.
  • Train subordinates in the proper method and safety involving assigned tasks.
  • Mixes and sprays chemicals to treat plant and turf diseases or eliminate pests.
  • Operate various types of equipment, from handheld to light equipment.
  • Ensure that all supplies, chemicals, and equipment are used and stored correctly.
  • Maintain and ensure inventory is accurate to maintain equipment, parks, and facilities within our division.
  • Provide input on reporting of assignments of staff to the direct supervisor.
  • Obtain quotes, estimates, and order materials to complete tasks properly.
  • Complete work orders and submit them to Park Manager daily.
  • Utilize EAM (work order tracking system) to book labor and provide necessary details.
  • Prepares and reports on-the-job injuries
  • Snow removal and other weather-related duties.
  • Lead and monitor Park/General Maintenance Workers with day-to-day job duties, general park maintenance, program support, playgrounds, snow removal, ballfield, and trail maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school graduate or GED, and five years of progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and park maintenance; or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Pass Commission medical examination.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
a. Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.

  • Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
