Description
The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Park/General Maintenance Worker I to work within our Playground Program working in our Watkins Maintenance Facility in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This position will perform general park and building maintenance work involving moderate responsibility, complexity, and variety. The successful candidate will perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, trash removal, vegetation management, and removal, but could also perform athletic field maintenance, trail maintenance, cleaning and repairing park buildings, and snow removal by working in a team environment. This is a park/general maintenance position with work including some responsibility, complexity, and variety under close supervision. Work includes the operation of most small grounds’ maintenance equipment, such as hand tools, push mowers, and small riding mowers. The successful candidate will perform work of increasing difficulty and responsibility to develop and improve skills. The selected candidate also performs other related duties as assigned. This position will have a work schedule of Sunday-Thursday from 6:00am – 2:45pm. Please note that work locations and schedules are subject to change.

Please note that the salary range above represents earning potential. The budgeted salary range for this position is $31,951 – $45,698. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Assists in performing vegetation removal on Playgrounds, assists in border replacement around the playground and surface improvements through various manual labor duties.
  • Operates light to medium vehicles (example: stake body truck, small dump truck, pickup truck) with small trailers and equipment including small riding mowers, string trimmers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and small walk behind snow blowers.
  • Performs various manual labor duties to play equipment, signs, fences, picnic tables, and sheds. Shovels snow and spreads salt or other abrasives on sidewalks. Performs general grounds maintenance such as collecting, removing, and disposing of litter and debris.
  • Performs tree maintenance duties to include small hand tools such as a chain saw, and axe to cut down trees from grounds level. Operates chipping machine to grind into mulch.
  • Assists in performing maintenance and installation of park fixtures and furnishings.
  • Assists in performing routine maintenance and repairs to equipment and vehicles.
  • Receives training in mixing and spraying pesticides to include the organic Foamstream machine for vegetation management.
  • May collect and/or enter data into daily reports and work order completion. Assists with training seasonal staff.
  • Reports unsafe or hazardous conditions of park facilities and amenities.
  • Assists in setting up, monitoring, and taking down Commission programs and rental events. Informs visitors of rules and regulations. Opens and closes Commission facilities.
  • Interacts with visitors daily in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Snow removal and other related weather duties
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisors.
