The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and recreation facilities throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
Subsequently, the Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County.
The Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest Division within this Department and is composed of six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures(Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Heavy Equipment/Roads and Grounds, Sustainability, Aquatics and ADA) and the Administrative section. The mission of Facility Services Division is to provide professional, high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.
Examples of Important Duties
This position is located in the Forestry section of the Horticulture & Forestry (H&F) in the Facility Services Division. This position will work under general supervision, performing skilled park/general maintenance work involving considerable responsibility, complexity and variety. Operates chainsaws, chippers, power pruners, bobcats and bucket trucks. Operates complex equipment and vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating requiring a CDL. Using trucks and heavy equipment removes snow, and hauls materials and equipment. Performs routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment when required. Using the appropriate gear and observing safety protocols. Adhering to Commission and environmental regulations at all times.
Performs a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as: assisting Tree Climber/Leader, collecting and piling branches, maintaining tools and equipment, and ensuring hazard-free work areas. Performs tree planting, pruning and aftercare cleaning, removing leaf and debris, and raking, loading and unloading trucks and equipment maintenance. Reporting any issues or safety hazards to the supervisor or Tree Climber/Leader. You should be able to work with a variety of team members.
Salary $37,438 – $66,306
(Work Hours are 6:30 am – 3:15 pm)

Minimum Qualifications
1. High school graduate or GED, and four years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance; and demonstrated ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Pass Commission medical examination.
4. Valid driver’s license.
5. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
a. Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator’s certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
