Description
The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Southern Region Parks Division, is seeking applications for a Park/General Maintenance Worker III-CDL. The incumbent will perform a variety of maintenance tasks such as grass cutting, trash removal, athletic field maintenance, trail maintenance and cleaning and repairing park buildings and structures by working with and occasionally leading small groups of career and/or intermittent employees. Incumbent should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, and some trade skills in carpentry, painting, etc.
Examples of Important Duties
- Operation of mid-sized to large equipment to include large mowers, tractors with attachments, backhoe, loader etc.
- Operation of trucks, truck and trailer combinations, snowplows, dump trucks, trash trucks, etc.
- Hauling heavy-duty tractors, skid steer or other large equipment using a trailer and CDL vehicles.
- Occasional supervision of park maintenance employees performing general park maintenance tasks.
- Ability to perform minor repairs to playground equipment, carpentry, custodial, and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Perform general maintenance to playgrounds, buildings, and grounds.
- Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
- Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag and grade fields. Also sprays pesticides.
- Ability to work independently and be proficient in grounds maintenance as well as custodial services.
- Maintain inventories of supplies and materials.
- Performs stormwater facilities preventive maintenance according to the Department of Environment Protection standards.
- Maintain bio-retention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation and free of weeds.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
- Knowledge of groundskeeping, landscaping, parks and park/general maintenance operation, safety, turf maintenance, pesticides and their application, basic auto and equipment maintenance, cleaning agents and cleaning procedures and Commission organization, policies, and procedures*.
- Skill in operation of hand and power tools, riding mowers, tractor with attachments and trucks and/or truck trailer combinations.
- Ability to understand a system of procedures, read and understand labels, read and write routine reports and correspondence, be able to check and respond to email communication, provide courteous service, and lifting weights up to 100 pounds is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years’ experience working in the Grounds Management Industry.
- Certified Fertilizer Applicator, or the ability to obtain it within six-months.
- One year of experience in athletic fields maintenance to include mowing, lining, dragging, aeration, seeding, fertilization, and athletic field renovations.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school graduate or GED, and four years of progressively responsible experience in groundskeeping, building maintenance, or park maintenance; and demonstrated ability to read and understand materials and instructions and write routine records and reports; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Pass Commission medical examination.
4. Valid driver’s license.
5. Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.

Working Conditions:
- Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
- Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.).
- Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects of up to 100 pounds.
- An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
- Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
Ideal candidate should have good mechanical reasoning skills, some knowledge and experience with light trades duties, and be flexible with changing work program needs.
