Title: Park Naturalist

Department: Parks and Recreation

Supervisor: Parks Superintendent

Job Summary:

To develop high quality, modern, nature based programs and exhibits that will encourage the appreciation of central Indiana’s natural environment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Trains, schedules, supervise, disciplines, evaluates, and provides orientation to assigned program staff.
  • Coordinates daily work activities, organize and prioritize work assignments, monitor status of work in progress and inspects completed work.
  • Responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, and proper upkeep of the of assigned facilities.
  • Oversees upkeep all interpretive exhibits (indoors and outdoors)
  • Leads in the development and presentation of a wide variety of interactive public recreation and nature programs
  • Prepares, submits, and is responsible for adherence to annual program, exhibit, and janitorial budgets.
  • Develops a comprehensive program schedule for park visitors and school groups all seasons of the year.
  • Assists with the development of interactive displays and exhibits, brochures, and educational tools.
  • Presents and assigns staff to present programs at various sites within the county.
  • Enforces and trains staff on proper enforcement of park rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Displays and fosters to subordinate park personnel and exceptional and friendly attitude to all park visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Interpretation, Biology, or related field, and a minimum of (1) year experience working in Nature Centers, Nature Parks, or related areas.

Knowledge of modern media techniques used in the presentation of programs.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

License or Certificates:

Possession a valid Indiana driver’s license and the demonstration of a safe driving record.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

Duties will be performed equally in indoor and outdoor environment during all seasons of the year. This position requires the ability to walk/stand for long periods of time, walking on uneven terrain, and lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs. This position also requires the ability to speak and present programs clearly and effectively. The Park Naturalist will spend substantial time interacting with park patrons and must enjoy being the focal point of interaction with park visitors.

Responsibility:

The Park Naturalist reports directly to the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. The Park Naturalist is reviewed annually for: quality and effectiveness of program development and presentation; the development of new displays; ability to effectively supervise part-time and seasonal employees; the ability to represent Hendricks County Parks and Recreation with professionalism, friendliness, and enthusiasm to park visitors and members of the community; and for the support provided to the general operation of the parks.
