Park Worker III – Parks

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to perform manual work involved in ground maintenance of municipal building grounds, ball fields, all city parks, and in the absence of the Crew Chief, to supervise and participate in the work of staff involved in park maintenance and development.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

The Park Worker III functions as a lead worker at a work site with some supervision of a crew.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide site supervision of other Park employees in the absence of the Crew Chief. Assist the Parks supervisor in the training of assigned staff. Including the training of employees in the proper and safe operation of all maintenance equipment and tools.

Operate various types and sizes of equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, mulchers, edgers, ditchers, and weed eaters in the maintenance of right-of-ways, boulevards, vacant lots, municipal grounds, ball fields, and city parks.

Water and fertilize grass, trees, shrubs, and other plants; trim and prune trees and shrubs; prepare ground for planting; plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and grass; apply pesticides.

Paint, repair, and transport bleachers and picnic tables; paint, clean, and make simple repairs on playground equipment and park facilities and equipment. Sweep and clean sidewalks; pick up litter; clean restrooms.

Assist with light construction work such as fence construction, irrigation repair, and installation or forming and finishing concrete.

Operate larger maintenance and construction equipment such as front loader, backhoe, larger area mowers, and lift bucket. Operate parks maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, trucks, chipper, bucket hoist, and various small types of equipment. Assist with the daily and preventive maintenance of all equipment.

Perform minor pesticide applications such as glyphosate (Roundup).

Inspect assigned park areas for present and future improvement and maintenance needs; review with supervisor any improvement on equipment, operations, or working conditions that may be used in the maintenance of the parks.

Complete required daily, weekly, and monthly work reports. Ensure that all assigned personnel comply with City, Department, and safety regulations.

Lead and participate in all maintenance and construction work assignments. Assist in scheduling park maintenance and construction work in the assigned section.

Operate a city vehicle to travel to different parks, ballfields and facilities throughout the city

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Park maintenance, park maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies, and basic maintenance of that equipment.

Landscape construction practices, methods, tools, equipment and materials.

Upkeep of turf, trees, shrubs, and other plants.

Mobile device and computer data entry for work order systems.

Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill to:

Operates a variety of maintenance and construction equipment, tools, and vehicles including pickup truck, tractor, riding mower, push mower, edger, chain saw, string trimmer, utility lift bucket, brush chipper, and front loader.

Operate a motor vehicle safely.

Ability to:

Lead a work crew in the absence of the Crew Chief.

Enter work related data on Mobile device and/or computer for work order systems

Supervise, train, and evaluate staff.

Distinguish desirable plants from undesirable plants.

Complete digital and written work related reports.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience working in a landscape crew environment, preferably in a park maintenance and development setting is required.

Education/Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas Class C or higher driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Texas Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial applicators license or ability to obtain within 6 months is required.

Special Requirements:

Some exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.

Ability to travel to different sites.
