The City of Johnston is seeking an Administrative Assistant for our Parks and Recreation Department
We’re looking for someone who brings great administrative assistant experience, who understands that customer service is a top priority for all City employees, and who can provide timely, accurate assistance and responses to internal and external customers.
This position performs various tasks related to our parks and recreation department, including facility rentals, recreation programming reservations, and performing general clerical and administrative support duties.
Many times, you’ll be the first contact that visitors, residents, customers or vendors have with the Parks and Recreation Department – either via phone or in person.
You will handle all things related to the department. From helping someone book a facility reservation for an event, to recreation and departmental registrations; from billing and collecting for services, to providing assistance to a variety of boards related to the department.
You’ll respond to requests for information from city officials, fellow employees, and the public.
This position also oversees the maintenance of office equipment, purchases office supplies, and generally keeps the department running smoothly. Because of the importance of this position, regular work attendance is required.

- High school graduate or GED
- Considerable experience in general office operations, including public contact and money handling.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products
- Knowledge of financial office procedures and practices
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability and willingness to learn new skills quickly and adapt to rapidly changing information
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Willing to take initiative and work with limited direct supervision
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

- Must be able to routine lift objects weighing 10 lbs. and occasionally lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical and drug screen.
- Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license.
- A minimum typing speed of 40 wpm.
