Performs any combination of laboring, equipment operation, semi-skilled building and mechanical trade assignments involving the maintenance parks and property of municipality and the provision of scheduled and emergency services with the Parks and Recreation Department.

The following duties are normal for this position but dependent upon the level of skill, ability, and experience of the individual. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates, services and maintains tractors, mowers, skid steer loader and related parks department equipment; assists Maintenance Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of parks and other municipal vehicles and related equipment; checks gas, oil and fluids; washes vehicles.

Trims and removes trees and brush using chainsaw and chipper; rakes leaves and removes fallen branches and other objects which are hazardous to public safety in parks, cemeteries, street right-of-ways and on trails.

Removes snow and sand/salts streets and sidewalks using dump trucks, pickup trucks, snow blowers and related equipment.

Works in the field performing park maintenance work and participates in basic construction work as needed including concrete and dirt work, carpentry, wiring and plumbing.

Purchases needed parts and supplies; recommends purchases and requisitions of supplies and equipment: prepares cost estimates for purchases and planned or potential projects: and supervises the inventory of equipment and supplies.

Drives trucks equipped with dump body, tanks and peripheral equipment to transport loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rocks and related materials to job site; loads truck by hand or by operating mechanical loader.

Attends continuing education to obtain and/or retain required certifications and to stay informed of safe and acceptable practices.

Supervises the work of seasonal employees.

Maintains City parks, trails, cemeteries, right-of-ways and other landscaped areas by planting, removing brush and trash, mowing and trimming grass, weeding and watering, chemical application of fertilizers and herbicides, and other related turf, horticultural and tree maintenance tasks.

Maintains records of inspections, chemical applications, work completed, etc.

Hangs signs and decorations on municipal facilities and premises using hand and power tools; assists in the flood control and related emergency situations; assists in spring and fall cleanup tasks.

Performs related work as required.

Regular work attendance required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and at least five (5) years experience with park or landscape maintenance.
  • Possess a valid Iowa Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsements.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a job.
  • Ability to read mechanical diagrams.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to understand potential hazards and identify safety precautions.
  • Ability to operate light, medium and heavy equipment.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Job requires constant standing, walking and frequent stooping, laying, crawling, kneeling, crouching, reaching and grasping of objects such as parts and components. Frequent moving, lifting of tools, objects requiring force and physical effort of 75 lbs. or more. Pushing and pulling heavy objects and materials used in maintenance activities, solid waste removal and construction tasks. Regular exposure to noise, fumes, odors and related environmental conditions. Considerable exposure to bodily injury working with moving parts, electricity; requires concentrated eye/foot coordination, motor coordination, manual and finger dexterity, acceptable hearing and related cognitive abilities.

Driving, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, lifting, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping, and finger dexterity, repetitive motions.

LANGUAGE ABILITY AND INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Requires basic human relations skills in talking and/or signaling people to convey basic program information. Receiving and acting upon the instructions or orders of another person. Requires the ability to speak the English language using proper emphasis, variations and tense in the exchange of information. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors and the general public.

VISION REQUIREMENTS

Requires clarity of vision providing ability to read gauges, meters and related equipment requiring precise measurements and depth perception.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an environment with undesirable conditions: exposure to extreme heat and cold, rain and snow, noise, dust, fumes, moving parts, electrical shock, burns and toxic agents. Occupational hazards are those generally associated with regular direct exposure to moving machinery i.e. saws, backhoes, loaders, aerial lifts, asphalt and concrete paving work, leading to cuts, bruises, burns, strains, backaches and potentially more serious injury.
