Job Summary
Physically maintains city parks and recreation facilities available to community residents and guests.
Essential Functions
1. Operates various equipment in the maintenance of grounds such as weed eaters, out-front riding mowers, edgers, backpack blowers, sprayers, tractors, water truck brush hog, push movers, trencher, power auger, front end loaders, chains saws, dump trucks, various hand tools, small power boat, etc.
2. Plants and maintains flower beds, trees, shrubs, and grass areas.
3. Provides daily maintenance tasks that include trim shrubs and hedges, carpentry, setting forms, finishing concrete, etc.
4. Picks up trash at various facilities daily.
5. Provides construction of new play areas.
6. Builds park benches.
7. Replaces basketball and tennis nets.
8. Installs and takes down Christmas decorations.
9. Repairs broken irrigation systems.
10. Provides daily preparation of infields and playing fields (softball, baseball, and soccer).
11. Provides festival set up and take down.
12. Mows Athletic Fields.
13. Provides playground maintenance and inspection.
14. Grooms swim beaches.
15. Relocates floating docks.
16. Inspects boat ramp docks on land and on water.
17. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
18. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
19. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others in the course of daily work.
Required Skills
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
• Must have good customer skills.
• Must have the physical ability, endurance, and coordination to perform assigned tasks and operate assigned equipment.
• Must have regular and punctual attendance, flexibility to work overtime, and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.
• Requires reading, writing, and math skills at a level needed to understand directions, equipment operating procedures, safety rules etc.
• Must have the ability to operate tractors and mowers, do carpentry, form setting, or concrete finishing.
• Must have the physical condition to carry out the work tasks and a reasonable amount of eye to hand coordination.
• Must be a team player who is able to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.
• Ability to maintain cooperative-working relationships with employees and those contacted in the course of work.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Requires high school diploma or GED.
Must meet physical demands of outdoor working conditions which vary with seasons.
Must be able to work shift work, overtime, and be subject to on-call as required.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check and have a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1).
