The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the regular and full-time position of Parks Maintenance Worker I/II in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department. The anticipated vacancies are for full-time and benefitted positions; however, the employment list that will be established from this recruitment may be utilized to fill future regular, temporary, and limited term vacancies in the City for the duration of the list. The normal work schedule varies Sunday through Saturday, between the hours of 6 AM – 5 PM, with some shift schedules requiring evening and weekend work.

DEFINITION
To perform a variety of gardening and related duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park and recreation grounds and related facilities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Parks Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Parks Maintenance Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
Parks Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished from the I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Parks Maintenance Worker in that the latter performs advanced journey level work and provides technical and functional supervision to assigned staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Parks Maintenance Worker I
Receives immediate supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from a Senior Parks Maintenance Worker.
Parks Maintenance Worker II
Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor; receives technical and functional supervision from a Senior Parks Maintenance Worker.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Irrigate, mow, weed, trim, and fertilize lawns and landscaped areas; plant, water, and maintain various vegetation such as bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns; trim and prune bushes, trees and shrubs; stake trees as necessary.
- Check irrigation controller alarms; program, repair and replace as necessary; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.
- Clear debris or leaves by raking or using power blowers to clear walkways, paths, playing fields, courts and other parks/recreational facilities.
- Perform basic construction, carpentry, plumbing, and painting tasks; clean and re-stock bathroom facilities; load brush trimmings, rubbish, paper, and trash onto trucks for appropriate disposal.
- Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides in a safe and effective manner; perform a variety of cement and asphalt work; renovate and maintain stream bed areas including maintenance of trails and installation of vegetation and erosion control devices.
- Inspect and repair playground equipment, picnic tables, barbecues and other related parks/recreational equipment; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.
- Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities; grade, fill, and shape baseball diamonds and set up batting cages; maintain skate parks and bike trails; maintain a variety of in-door sports arena areas.
- Maintain municipal swimming pool pumps, filters, and related equipment; change chemicals in pools; refer to appropriate staff for further attention.
- Maintain and repair equipment within the City of Roseville facilities; perform inspections of fitness equipment, batting cages, rock climbing wall, water slide, and related equipment.
- Utilize proper safety precautions related to work performed.
- Set up and tear down materials and equipment for special events.
- Respond to on-site requests/inquiries from the public regarding parks/recreation facilities use and requests.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Parks Maintenance Worker I
Knowledge of:
- Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- Basic facilities construction and repair work and methods, including minor carpentry, pipe fitting, painting, and cement work.
- Safety rules and work practices used construction, maintenance, and repair of park and recreation grounds and related facilities.
- Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
Ability to:
- Learn to perform work in gardening and maintenance duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation grounds, City of Roseville facilities.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
- Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing park maintenance/gardening activities; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less.
- Learn to operate a computer as necessary to perform job duties.
- Operate parks/landscaping maintenance equipment, with proper licenses or certificates, such as dump trucks, backhoes, and front loaders.
- Operate parks/landscaping maintenance power tools such as mowers, edgers and blowers; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment.
- Work assigned on evenings, weekend, or holidays; work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Complete forms, maintain logs, and related records.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Training
Experience:
- No experience is required; experience in turf care, irrigation, playground safety, tree work, or construction is highly desirable.
AND
Training:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree.
License or Certificate
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
Parks Maintenance Worker II
In addition to the qualifications for the Parks Maintenance Worker I:
Knowledge of:
- If assigned to park maintenance: parks/landscaping and maintenance equipment, including commercial mowing equipment; uses, handling, and storage of pesticides and herbicides; construction and repair methods used in carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
- If assigned to pool maintenance: basic pool chemistry.
Ability to:
- Independently perform work in gardening and maintenance duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation grounds and related facilities.
Experience and Training
Experience:
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing grounds maintenance and repair work similar to that of a Parks Maintenance Worker I with the City of Roseville.
AND
Training:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree; additional course work or training in landscape maintenance or agriculture is highly desirable.
License or Certificate
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
