Job Summary/Scope
The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of parks and recreation buildings and facilities. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and attractive parks and recreation facilities to city residents and visitors.
The work consists of related technical duties.
Job Responsibilities
Major Duties
- Performs building maintenance; performs carpentry, plumbing, welding, and electrical maintenance and repair duties.
- Performs small engine repair.
- Sets up tables, chairs, and sports equipment as needed.
- Installs playground equipment; installs and repairs chain link fences; repairs tennis courts and paints lines.
- Fabricates park signs.
- Repairs and maintains sports stadium.
- Operates lawn mowers, tractor, backhoe, front end mower, and bobcat to maintain sports fields and related grounds and facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Guidelines
- Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, Parks and Recreation Policy Manual, relevant city, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
- The position has direct supervision over Parks Maintenance Worker I (5).

Parks Maintenance Worker I

Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL within twelve months of hire.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certification is required
- No experience requirements.
Parks Maintenance Worker II
$31,968.32 – $52,907.70
Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B CDL within twelve months of hire.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certification is required
- Pesticide License preferred
Parks Maintenance Worker III
$33,586.72 – $55,546.94
Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B CDL within twelve months of hire.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certification is required
- Pesticide License, Certified Pool Operator and Certified Reclaimed Water Applicator preferred
Parks Maintenance Worker IV

Education/Experience Requirements
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a Class B CDL within twelve months of hire.

Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of the standards, materials, techniques, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of parks and recreations buildings and facilities.
- Knowledge of the installation of playground equipment.
- Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Skill in the operation of such light equipment as a stump grinder, lawnmower, and weed eater.
- Skill in the operation of such heavy equipment as a backhoe, tractor, and bobcat.
- Skill in performing basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, and fiberglass installation, repair, and maintenance duties.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- The work is typically performed outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
- The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals, and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, gloves, or goggles.
- The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.
