Hiring Range $26.01 – $30.60/hr | Salary Range $26.01 – $35.19/hr

The incumbent performs unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance of the City and County’s undeveloped and developed park areas and cemetery. Their primary responsibilities include performing a variety of routine to moderate difficulty tasks related to the City and County’s Parks and Cemeteries Operations and providing information and assistance to City and County staff and the public.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

Supervises and participates in the preparation, development, and maintenance of park areas including including mowing and trimming; tree and flower maintenance and planting; tree pruning; herbicide and insecticide application; shrub pruning; fertilization, installation and repair of turf; trash removal; installation and removal of holiday lighting; special event set-up and tear down; and equipment maintenance and operation. Collaborates with other divisions within the parks department to assist in parks operations.

Assists Irrigation staff in determining proper water needs and scheduling. Assists Forestry staff in pruning of small caliper trees in the Urban Forest. Tracks and records all chemical use in Pesticide Log book. Prepares, develops, and manages a maintenance schedule for assigned areas and offers support in set-up for special events. Assists in inspections of contractor work, trash removal, painting, and equipment maintenance and operation.

Acts as troubleshooter to resolve problems within a particular area of assignment. Coordinates and participates in set-up for special events. May assist in other areas of the Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services department.

Recruit, schedule, train, supervise and prepare performance evaluations on lower-level division employees. Prepares and implements a weekly work schedule, and recommends appropriate disciplinary action when needed. Assists supervisor in training of seasonal maintenance crew. May act as a troubleshooter to resolve problems within a particular area of assignment.

Trains lower-level personnel in the operation of and preventive maintenance on equipment. Organizes, prioritizes daily task for self and seasonal employees. Trains seasonal employees in proper maintenance practice of all types of plant material and proper pesticide application methods.

Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs on equipment. May make modifications to existing equipment for adaptation to department’s needs. Assists in major maintenance and repairs of division equipment. Prepare requests for new equipment, materials and supplies.

Respond to complaints from the public regarding parks and facilities conditions. Ensures that problems are corrected in a timely and effective manner. Inspects work performed by private contractors to insure conformance to written City specifications.

Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance, construction, and inspection of parks and facilities. Prepares requests for new equipment, materials, and supplies. Responds to complaints from the public regarding parks and facility conditions. Ensure that problems are corrected in a timely and effective manner. Completes reports and inventory as required.

Operates construction and maintenance equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, tractors, water trailers, riding mowers, hand mowers, front-loaders, backhoes, box scrapers, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, sprayers, spreaders, weed trimmers, pruning tools, trenchers, grinders, and hand tools. Provides back-up coverage in the operation of snowplows during inclement weather.

Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual digging, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting and turning the upper body, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching for objects, walking and standing. The incumbent must also be alert to peripheral activities when operating equipment and therefore must have a full range of movement in the neck and shoulders.

Minimum Qualifications

Training – High school graduation or GED equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of responsible parks maintenance operations in horticulture.
  • A State of Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License is preferred
  • Experience in supervising seasonal staff is preferred.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: written evaluation (if requested), oral board, reference checks, driving record check through DMV, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry check, and pre-placement physical.

Working Conditions
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The noise level in the environment is usually loud. Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend and holiday work required. Position also involves on-call duty which requires working weekends on a rotating basis and working all hours during emergency repairs as needed. Travel by pickup truck is required to reach work sites. The incumbent is exposed to the following environmental factors: work near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; working in or near moving traffic; fumes or airborne particles; electrical shock; toxic or caustic chemicals; year-round outdoor temperatures and weather conditions; and vibration. May have exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Please note that the frequency of the activity may depend on the actual assignment in the Park Division as found in a Job Site Evaluation prepared by the Colorado Center for Rehabilitation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee uses hands and/or feet to perform manual tasks such as lifting and digging. The employee is constantly required to talk or hear; perform simple grasping; smell; and perform cervical motions such as flexion, extension, rotation, and sidebending. The employee is constantly to frequently required to stand, walk, push/pull, bend/stoop, and reach forward; frequently required to twist, crouch/kneel/squat, reach below the waist, reach above the shoulder, perform power grasping, and perform fine hand manipulation; and occasionally required to sit, climb vertically, crawl and be in quadruped position, work from heights, and work in confined space. Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.
