Parks Superintendent

Department: Sedgwick County Parks & Lake Afton

Pay: $58,593.60 annually

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 to 5:00 pm with on-call availability evenings and weekends

The Parks Superintendent is responsible for management of the Sedgwick County Parks Department, including Lake Afton Park, Sedgwick County Park, and Northeast Sedgwick County Park. This position oversees personnel management, program development, and budget.

Business Operations

  • Act as the hiring authority for the Parks Department, and communicate with staff included in the hiring process
  • Oversee compliance with all county policies and industry best practices for administrative activities, including purchasing, merchandising, and rental administration
  • Act as the decision-making authority for access, cost, and quality of amenities offered
  • Meet regularly with direct reports and department staff
  • Act as the head of the negotiation team for contracts, including the shelter rental program and external services performed for the Parks Department

Park Development

  • Oversee development and implementation of the strategic plan
  • Act as the authority for evaluating and approving facility improvement recommendations from staff and the community
  • Inspect Parks’ grounds and services to ensure safety, efficiency, and effectiveness; provide reports with findings as needed
  • Develop and oversee plans for routine and preventative maintenance for all facilities
  • Oversee and provide input for construction, maintenance, and repairs
  • Assist with construction, maintenance, and repair projects as needed, including using heavy equipment and machinery
  • Oversee monitoring and maintenance of park systems roadways and paths to meet guest needs

Collaborative Interaction

  • Act as the decision-making authority for escalated concerns/complaints from the community
  • Seek and advocate for adequate funding to maintain and improve the Parks Department
  • Work with internal and external partners to maintain park and guest safety
  • Represent the Parks Department when presenting to elected officials and the public
  • Build positive relationships with external partners, including event planners, fundraising sponsors, and park guests
  • Speak to community members and groups about the Parks Department’s mission and vision

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college in Public or Business Administration, Horticulture, or a related field. Education may be subsituted with experience, with one year of experience for one year of education. Five years of experience in Business, Horticulture, Recreation, Skilled Trades or a related field. Three years of supervision experience. One year of experience with Microsoft Suite or similar systems. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must have or obtain Class A CDL within one year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: Seven years of experience in Business, Horticulture, Recreation, Skilled Trades, or a related field. Current Commercial Driver’s license. Journeyman’s license in Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, or Carpentry.
