Job Description
An employee in this class performs routine equipment operator work for the maintenance of park grounds and athletic fields. The employee may operate a pickup truck, rotary mower, reel mower, pesticide sprayer, fertilizer spreader, weed eater, leaf blower, aerator, and hand tools. Work requires using judgment in complying with established rules and guidelines established by the City of Burlington. Judgment is required in determining what conditions are acceptable for maintenance. Work is performed under the supervision of the Turf Management Superintendent and is evaluated through staff meetings, compliance with established policy and procedures and effectiveness of work completed. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Performs manual and responsible labor in the daily maintenance of park landscaping and grounds. Also, assists with maintenance of athletic fields as called upon by supervisor.

Examples of Duties
- Maintains mowers and other equipment used for daily operations; repairs minor items around park as needed
- Performs mowing and weed eating of, parks, right of ways, traffic islands, creek banks, and other City grounds
- Answers questions from the general public
- Empties trash receptacles and cleans bathroom facilities
- Replenishes fuel, sharpens mower blades and reels, checks oil and filters, greases, replaces strings in weed eaters, washes equipment
- Participates in the landscaping and horticultural improvements for grounds surrounding ball fields and other facilities, plants and water flowers and trees, prunes shrubs and trees, weeds flower beds, and mulches
- Performs related duties as required
Qualifications
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance pertaining to function and use of recreation and parks facilities
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance
- Knowledge of proper chemical use application
- Skill in operating a mower, tractor, truck, leaf blower, weed eater, and other grounds keeping equipment
- Skill in seeding, strawing, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other City employees and the general public
- Ability to receive and carry out instructions provided by a supervisor
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to identify and report the maintenance needs of various grounds and landscaping
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED Equivalency and considerable work experience in the maintenance of parks and recreation ground facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects. Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned, and be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes and other equipment. Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts. This employee is also subject to noise, vibration, oils, and extreme heat. Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
