Position Summary

Inventory/Watering: Works as part of the maintenance crew under direct and indirect supervision. Work includes inventorying existing tree canopy using a tree inventory software, and watering newly planted trees throughout the city. Requires the ability to drive a 1 ton truck safely and efficiently to a route around the city and track the health of newly planted trees.

Tree crew/Watering: Works as part of the tree crew preforming routine maintenance of street and park trees including but not limited to planting, pruning and chipping. This position will also assist with watering newly planted trees throughout the city. Requires the ability to drive a 1 ton truck safely and efficiently and the ability to operate a variety of equipment including chainsaws, chipper truck, and trucks pulling trailers.

40 hours per week for approximately 26 weeks
Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm

The Parks Operations Division of Corvallis’ Parks and Recreation Department cares for over 2000 acres of parks, play grounds, playing fields, trails, open spaces and beautification areas.

Essential Functions

Casual Park Workers will assist in performing some or all of the following essential functions depending on assigned area. Assigned areas included Sports Maintenance, Building Maintenance and Park Sanitation, Landscape and Park Tree Maintenance, and Street Tree Maintenance.

Landscape and Park Tree Maintenance: Assists with landscape area maintenance and tree care including but not limited to planting, pruning and chipping. Operates a variety of equipment including chainsaws, weed-eaters, tractors, loaders, trucks and trucks pulling trailers. Maintains general horticultural knowledge.

Street Tree Maintenance: Assists with young tree pruning and training, tree watering, tree data collection, and educational outreach. Maintains knowledge of general tree care.

Assists with festivals and special events.

Assists with other Park Maintenance duties as assigned.

Practices safe job-site methods while performing duties. Conforms with all safety rules and performs work is a safe manner.

Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.

Maintains effective work relationships.

Adheres with all City and Department policies.

Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintain regular job attendance.

Operates and drives a motor vehicle and equipment safely and legally.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education, training or experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instruction and to exchange routine information. Basic understanding of simple work processes, methods or equipment. Ability to learn job-related information and techniques.

Ability to learn required physical skills, that must be performed in the course of regular work routines that can be learned on the job over a relatively short period of time.

Effective communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills. Ability to use ordinary conversational skills and courtesy to exchange routine information and provide routine assistance.

Ability to work in a team-oriented environment, but also work alone at a work-site, under supervisory direction while performing duties thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with Department policy.

Under certain circumstances position may involve working overtime and on weekends as needed.
