Part- Time: Editorial Manager, Communications

The Editorial Manager, Communications, works independently and is the lead stakeholder responsible for the publication of the print and online (pdf) versions of KQED’s monthly member magazine On KQED, and the creation of a monthly digital (web-based) version of the magazine. The position manages relationships with vendors and contractors involved in the production of the monthly publication and coordinates with internal content creators.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED’s newly renovated headquarters and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Salary Information: $38.00-$48.00 per hour

Responsibilities

  1. Plans, manages, writes and edits On KQED magazine. Supervises all publication production activities.
  2. Supervises and coordinates manufacturing, distribution and mailing of the magazine and assigned publications with our print vendor. Manages postage payments and monitors timeliness of delivery.
  3. Negotiates with vendors about print costs and distribution.
  4. Monitors monthly member magazine budget.
  5. Collaborates with the Production Coordinator and an outside copy editor.
  6. Responds to and reviews magazine-related member feedback and implements changes to On KQED when necessary.
  7. Continually reviews, streamlines and innovates the processes and content of On KQED to streamline production costs and create engaging content for readers.
  8. Copyedits the magazine’s e-newsletter counterpart, Selects.
  9. Collaborates with cross-functional team members to develop stories and story ideas, and to supply assets for inclusion in the magazine.
  10. Project manages, edits and produces at least a minimal version of the Report to the Community, an annual publication requirement of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
  11. Keeps continually current on best editing practices, including integrating inclusive language into On KQED magazine.
  12. Participates in internal reviews, receiving and interpreting feedback on all deliverables.
  13. Manages updates and revisions of key internal and external websites (ISSUU for example).
  14. Works with the Publication Coordinator to schedule and lead the monthly Advance Media Review meeting.

Position Qualifications

  1. Excellent writing skills, including the ability to write everything from internal communications to strategic reports to magazine stories.
  2. Proficient in Adobe InDesign.
  3. At least five years of editorial experience
  4. At least three years of experience managing a periodical.
  5. Excellent developmental editing, copy editing and proofreading skills.
  6. Strong understanding of print and digital production processes, graphic design terms, processes, and procedures.
  7. Understanding and interest in inclusive language
  8. Excellent attention to detail.
  9. Ability to diplomatically collaborate with staff and vendors to coordinate projects and activities.
  10. Experience preparing and monitoring budgets.
  11. Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
