Part-Time, On-Call CityTV Field Producer:

The part-time CityTV Field Producer is an on-call, part-time position that assists CityTV full-time staff in the production and recording of field shoots covering City of Somerville and Somerville Public School activities, events, meetings, and more. A division of the City of Somerville Communications and Community Engagement Department, CityTV provides video services and runs two sets of CableTV and YouTube channels for the City and schools: GovTV and EduTV. Both provide important information and alternative access to updates, news, public processes, legislative sessions, educational programming, and sporting and cultural events. This position offers the opportunity to work with a dedicated team on a wide range of topic areas to benefit the community.

Flexibility is key. Shooting schedules change weekly and will be coordinated to accommodate the Field Producer’s as best as possible. Shoots are mainly evenings and weekends but can also be on weekdays, and shoot length runs from 1-2 hours to 8 hours with most jobs being about 3 hours. The Field Producer may work up to but not more than 19 hours per week.

Duties:

– Field produce and record a range of field shoots either as a one-person operation or part of a team:

  • Record video and audio in a variety of settings and for a range of events both for handheld shoots and stationary setups
  • Assist with setup and operation of remote livestreaming productions
  • Assemble, check, pack, charge, transport, and restock production equipment
  • Set up video camera, audio, and lighting equipment in a variety of settings: indoors, outdoors, meetings, performances, indoor and outdoor sporting events, press conferences, on-site interviews, etc.
  • Coordinate with and mic on-camera subjects
  • From off-camera, conduct occasional brief interviews with provided scripts (on-camera skills welcome but not required)
  • Deliver, upload, or transfer files to CityTV
  • Familiarity with portable teleprompter operation preferred but not required

– Assist CityTV staff with additional production duties as needed including uploading content, editing, captioning, graphics, and other tasks

– Assist occasionally with multi-camera studio shoots:

  • Serve as camera operator, assist with lighting, set set-up

– Occasional control room duties:

  • Operate live-streaming, multi-camera recording controls
  • Launch cablecasting and live-streaming for legislative sessions

Skills:

– Excellent videography skills:

  • Full proficiency with camcorders required and DSLRs preferred
  • Visually creative
  • Quick reaction time
  • Skilled in hand-held techniques
  • Ability to troubleshoot

– Excellent sound skills:

  • Ability to record quality sound on one-person shoots using a range of recording setups:
  • camera mic, lavaliers, booms, hand-held, stand, etc.

– Strong field production skills:

  • Portable lighting skills for a variety of settings required
  • Ability to assess locations quickly and determine best vantage points for stationary shoots
  • Skilled at on-site assessment of activities at larger events such as festivals to develop shooting plan to best capture the event as a whole
  • Understanding of sports, performance, and educational recording approaches to best capture athletic events, cultural programming, and instructional content
  • Comfort with simple on-the-street interviewing and recording

– Strong Technical skills:

  • Editing and graphics skills beneficial, but not required
  • Facility with equipment and computer interfaces (transferring and uploading data etc.)
  • Must be open to and skilled at learning new technologies and procedures

– Preferred control room skills:

  • Familiarity with Tricaster system a plus
  • Skilled in sound board and remote camera-control operation preferred

– Excellent and confident communication skills:

  • Comfort interacting with staff, members of the public, and elected officials
  • Ability to navigate on-site logistics as they arise
  • Skilled at wrangling to get needed footage/sound at press conferences or media scrums

– Logistical requirements:

  • Cell phone and reliable transportation required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds required
  • Must have a flexible schedule with availability days, evenings, and weekends as needed
  • Comfort working in a range of weather conditions

– Bilingual or multi-lingual skills a plus

– Interest in local government, education, the arts, and school athletics a plus
