Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing students with individualized assistance to help them learn new concepts and complete assignments. Tutors are responsible for leading one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to the needs and goals of the students. Priority will be given to tutors who can provide content or study skill support and work well with students in our healthcare and trades programs.
Essential Functions
- Assisting students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks
- Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
- Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions
- Providing students with positive and constructive feedback
- Building meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds
- Diagnosing student needs through active listening techniques and questioning strategies
- Recognizing different learning styles and student preferences
- Document tutoring session by ensuring that students sign in to track their attendance
- Complete a Consultation Log after each session to document the learning issues addressed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
- Education: Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Thorough knowledge of a specific academic subject or expertise in test preparation
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions and deliver feedback
- Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance using effective goal-setting strategies
- Creativity and flexibility in order to personalize their learning approach for individual students
- Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance
- Able to assist English Language Learners
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This job is mainly sedentary with physical activities normally required in an office environment. Frequent sitting and standing (33%-66% of the time) and constant lifting (more than 66% of the time) of 10 pounds or less.
