Under direction of the Recreation Coordinator, observes recreation activities and supervises the use of various City facilities. Responds to unsafe conditions or potential hazards. Schedules the use of the fitness center, racquetball court and gym. Cleans and maintains assigned facility and performs related tasks as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Make rounds to all areas of assigned facility every 30-45 minutes, including restrooms, outside of the building, and parking lot.
  • Ensure that all recreation activities are conducted safely and appropriately.
  • Refill soda and candy machines when needed.
  • Perform light custodial duties, such as restocking the restrooms (i.e. toilet paper, soap dispensers, etc.), sweeping, spot mopping floors and emptying trash cans.
  • Ensure that all lights, coolers/heaters/HVAC, stereos, and other equipment are turned off prior to leaving and perform one last walk outside the building to ensure all doors are secured and locked when closing for the day/night.
  • Set building alarm when exiting building for the evening.
  • Keep hallway clear of people.
  • Enforce all facility rules and regulations.
  • Compile hourly user statistics and document all staff reports, facility issues, participant concerns, injuries, and incidents.
  • Assist in the preparation and updating of a variety of reports and forms.
  • Review computer-produced reports for accuracy and format, and make corrections as directed.
  • Assist in research and compile information from such files.
  • Perform receptionist duties, greet and screen visitors and telephone calls, and schedule meetings.
  • Transfer calls to proper person.
  • Provide factual information regarding inquiries about the City, department, office or program activities and functions, and pass complaints on to supervisors.
  • Receive payment for organizational units or incidental services.
  • Prepare a variety of reports, registrations for events, issue documents, bid packages, and other plans and specifications.
  • Contact Police when necessary due to problems that cannot be resolved with on-site personnel.
  • Operate cash register, handle cash, make exact change and prepare funds for deposit.
  • Provide program and other information as requested.
  • Assist in facility and/or equipment maintenance.
  • Answer telephone, provide information or take a message.
  • Log all broken and/or damaged equipment.
  • Dispense uniforms, pictures or equipment as instructed.
  • Assign computers to patrons at the Technology Center.
  • Perform field or site preparation which include chalking/painting fields, set-up and take-down of equipment for various sports and programs.
  • Oversee and supervise scheduled games and activities.
  • Open and close the Skate, Soccer and Spray Parks.
  • Fill in as a coach, official, or scorekeeper if necessary.
  • Respond to all injuries, assist in immediate first aid, and follow proper emergency procedures.
  • Provide support to the Recreation Manager and Recreation Coordinator on specific projects as assigned.
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings, trainings, and workshops.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work site.
  • Perform a variety of other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic knowledge of Windows based computer systems.
  • Basic telephone etiquette, the proper use, and operation of telephone systems.
  • Correct use of oral and written English, spelling, punctuation, and composition.
  • Record keeping principles and practices.
  • Operation of standard office equipment.

Skilled in:

  • Reading, interpreting and applying written procedures and policies.
  • Performing detailed work such as arithmetic computations.
  • Organizing and maintaining records and files.
  • Composing routine correspondence from typed or handwritten drafts.
  • Operating standard office equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating with the public.
  • Preparing reports.
  • Understanding and following oral as well as written orders.

Ability to:

  • Make mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Operate a PC and related software.
  • Operate a keyboard with a tested speed of at least 35 (net) words per minute.
  • Maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintain records and perform data entry.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning of building and other areas as assigned.
  • Communicate and work effectively with the public.
  • Physically be present at the worksite to ensure proper staffing levels.
  • Be consistent in reporting on time and working full workdays and workweeks as assigned.
  • Read, understand, and apply established City policies, procedures, practices, and regulations and those of the employing organizational unit.
  • Operate specialized department office equipment and read and interpret specialized department documents.

Education and/or Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
  • Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience or training in a clerical or general office setting with public contact, desirable.
  • Must be willing to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts on a rotational basis and able to respond to emergency situations during off-hours.
