Patent Attorney

Microsoft’s Patent Group has an immediate opening for a Patent Attorney. In this role, you will support Microsoft’s Office Cloud & Applications Business on their patent filing strategy, including identifying patentable inventions from engineering teams, making worldwide filing and prosecution decisions, understanding the patent portfolio and the associated technologies aligned to the business strategy, and supervising outside counsel. You will also partner closely with other Microsoft legal professionals to counsel the business on all aspects of patents and related rights.

We are looking for a Patent Attorney with technical, legal and communication skills, and a proven track record in managing projects, collaborating well with others, having a desire to learn and try new things, and demonstrating perseverance and focus in a constantly changing environment.

Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree
    • OR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
  • 3+ years experience as a practicing attorney at a law firm or in-house experience in patent law
    • OR equivalent practice of law.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A technical background in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or the equivalent experience is also preferred

Legal Counsel IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $101,200 – $194,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $130,000 – $213,200 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a team that provides day-to-day legal advice, builds, protects, and maintains Microsoft’s patent portfolio, drafts a variety of transaction related documents, and manages resolution of legal disputes and risks related to intellectual property.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the engineering team related to intellectual property protection and risk mitigation.
  • Support business negotiations and draft associated agreements for complex intellectual property issues.
  • Effectively and efficiently work with other in-house subject matter experts, legal teams and outside legal counsel to advise leadership and solve problems.
  • Keep informed of relevant legal developments as they occur and analyze their applicability to the company’s activities and objectives
