Patent Paralegal

TheIntellectual Property Group (IPG) within Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA)is looking for an experienced Patent Paralegal to support our business of protecting Microsoft’s innovations. The role requires patent prosecution knowledge, organizational skills, attention to detail, and to juggle multiple requests.

Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree AND 1+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area
    • OR 3+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area
  • Patent experience or related IP experience required (in-house or law firm)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word and SharePoint and Excel

Preferred/ Additional Qualifications:

  • Prior experience and general knowledge in the computer software technology field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail and results oriented with excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Prior experience and general knowledge in the computer software technology field.
  • Analytical problem solving, ability to deal with ambiguity and move forward based on solid assumptions and risk mitigation.
  • Ability to impact and influence others without direct authority.
  • Ability to work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines in a fast-paced environment, prioritize workflow and adjust to frequent workload fluctuations.
  • Ability to learn new data collection systems quickly and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Excellent issues management skills, including ability to identify root causes, drive for resolution, and make improvements systematically

Paralegal IC2 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $62,700 – $115,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $84,800 – $129,600 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Microsoft patent attorneys on counseling client groups to select the appropriate inventions to patent, determine appropriate filing timelines and manage filing strategies to achieve patent protection within budget expectations.
  • Coordinate and participate in inventor patent training discussion and patent review discussions.
  • Partner with the patent attorneys to manage US and International Patent prosecution dockets and work to ensure Outside Counsel is meeting deadlines. Manage filing date deadlines, signature requirements, foreign filing licenses and assist with resolving any patent discrepancies.
  • Partner with patent attorneys and other team members on various projects and initiatives.
  • Generate reports and pivots in Excel and assist with creating PowerPoint presentations.
  • Provide high level data analysis generated by our various tools.
  • Develop an understanding of Patent Group procedures, including an understanding of engineering teams supported by various Patent Development Teams and related procedures.
