Position Summary

The Physician Assistant functions as part of a care team who, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary health team, is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care. The Physician Assistant provides independent and collaborative medical management to a defined patient population, according to standardized procedures and in collaboration with a physician supervisor. Provides primary, secondary, and in some cases, tertiary care within scope of practice, licensure, and organizational policies. Services provided include, but are not limited to: taking histories, conducting physical examinations, ordering, performing, and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests and therapies and furnishing drugs and devices in a cost-efficient manner for specific conditions. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, disease prevention and patient education, combining the qualities of both nursing and medicine. Acts as a health care resource and role model to staff by maintaining a high degree of ethics and integrity.

Key Responsibilities include:

Demonstrates knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation and epidemiology of medical conditions

Performs history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate, concise, relevant and appropriate. Documents the consultation and new patient note.

Performs orders and instructions for radiation therapy simulation and appropriate image-guidance. Orders and appropriate analyzes diagnostic tests including but not limited to laboratory and imaging evaluations. Orders all test necessary in preparation for radiation therapy.

Navigates the patient through the process of care for radiation therapy.

The Physician Assistant will see patients on treatment with the supervision of an attending physician and help answer questions and manage radiation specific toxicities.

Develops, implements, and evaluates the plan of care with modifications as needed and in coordination with attending physician when appropriate.

Performs routine procedures pertinent to the practice and as granted through the privilege process.

The Physician Assistant sees patients in follow-up after radiation therapy, manages side-effects, and provides survivorship care.

During simple follow-up cases, the Physician Assistant may independently manage patients in follow-up including ordering follow-up imaging, providing medical care, and support to the patient including ordering pharmacological agents.

Interprets imaging and communicates with attending physician regarding interval patient change.

Prescribes and councils patients on narcotic use safety.

Demonstrates pharmacologic knowledge including indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions, and adverse effects of pharmacologic agents.

Reviews treatment and therapy plans with patients and appropriate family members.

Practices clinical care informed by evidence-based literature.

Participates in radiation oncology specific clinical quality and research projects.

Instructs and counsels patients in matters related to health care management including diet, medication and physical and mental health needs and refers to the appropriate specialists when appropriate.

Demonstrates appropriate use and familiarity of personal protective equipment including eye protection/googles, face shield, gown, lab coat, non-sterile and sterile medical gloves, respirator, protective shoe covering.

Provides patient care that is patient centered, compassionate, appropriate, and effective, with emphasis on efficiency and comprehensiveness of the care provided.

Demonstrates understanding of all professional and regulatory standards.

Collaborates with colleagues to provide sound decision-making.

Communicates effectively with all customers and colleagues to meet organizational goals.

Professionalism, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration:

Acts as a liaison between the care team or other services and physician

Completes written documentation and billing in a timely fashion in line with the City of Hope standards of documentation and billing.

Recognizes and evaluates situations which call for immediate attention of the attending physician.

Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and other healthcare personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information

Maintains professionalism with patients and City of Hope staff and colleagues.

Follows established City of Hope and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental and infection control guidelines.

Maintains professional physician assistant certification, licensure, and prescribing abilities.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Demonstrates practices aligned with diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration.

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with a Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant
  • Three years as a Physician Assistant highly preferred

Required Certification/Licensure

  • Current California Physician Assistant License.
  • Must have a current DEA
  • Must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card through American Heart Association
  • Must have a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) card through American Heart Association

Additional Information:

Pay Scale: $119,000 – $213,832.00

  • The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
