Join Lincoln Parks and Recreation at Pioneers Park Nature Center, where you’ll have the unique opportunity to serve as our Nature Center Coordinator. Comprised of 668 acres of pristine tallgrass prairie, woodlands, saline wetlands, interpretive and educational buildings, the Nature Center has been a cherished environmental education hub and wildlife sanctuary since 1963. As the steward of our mission to interpret the natural history of Nebraska and the central Great Plains, promote environmental appreciation, conservation ethics, and provide a haven for both wildlife and people, you’ll play a pivotal role in fostering a deeper connection between nature and our community.

Nature of Work/Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide strategic leadership and coordinate planning for Pioneers Park Nature Center.
  • Lead Outdoor Education, Visitor Services, and Land Management staff in the daily operations of Pioneers Park Nature Center.
  • Organize, develop, and conduct a comprehensive environmental education and interpretive program at Pioneers Park Nature Center and within the community.
  • Develop and maintain cooperation between public, civic, professional, and voluntary agencies with shared goals and objectives.
  • Develop budgets and monitor expenses for areas of responsibility.

Desirable Knowledge, Abilities & Skills/Desirable Training & Experience

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques related to environmental education.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a public nature center.
  • Considerable knowledge of earth and life sciences and natural history.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, develop and implement outdoor educational programs for groups of all ages. Ability to recruit, train and coordinate a comprehensive volunteer program.
  • Ability to plan, assign and coordinate the work of subordinate employees engaged in outdoor environmental activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, subordinates, public officials, civic organizations, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications/Necessary Special Requirements
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in earth or life sciences, education, or related field and two years of experience developing and implementing outdoor educational programs plus six months of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; occasional evenings and weekends for special events and community meetings.

To be eligible for insurance benefits, employees must work at least 30 hours per week.

To be eligible for the retirement plan, employees must work at least 20 hours per week.

Temporary, seasonal, and unclassified employees are not eligible for benefits.
