What to Expect

This position reports to the Strategic Planning Environmental & Research Division Director as well as performs work for the Transportations Planning Organization.

What Qualifications are Needed

A bachelor’s degree; and

Three or more years of experience in marketing, communications, and public outreach.

Or

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience would reasonably be expected to provide the job-specific competencies noted below.

What Qualifications are Nice to Have

The ideal candidate is a strong writer that can produce work for different types of audiences and purposes. The ideal candidate will have experience with, or proficiency in, some of the following: Constant Contact, legal advertising, social media, conversational Spanish, Microsoft Office, WordPress, meeting facilitation and ADA compliance. Previous work experience with a local government entity is a plus.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Under the guidance of senior leadership, formulates comprehensive program plans and strategies pertaining to developing and improving media and community relations.
  • Coordinates agency speakers for special events and programs.
  • Uses InDesign and Canva to create documents, flyers, social media designs, and other promotional materials for public engagement outreach initiatives.
  • Translates complex information into visual products, short summaries/blurbs, news articles, and messaging that the public can understand and find relevant.
  • Effectively uses various social media platforms for public engagement.
  • Conducts pertinent statistical research and program analysis within the area of media and community relations, makes recommendations for improving the public engagement program, and writes reports.
  • Organizes and conducts outreach activities and meetings, such as setting up and staffing an information table, or arranging and facilitating a community workshop group discussion, whether in-person or virtual.
  • Accurately and empathetically transcribes comments from the public and summarizes key messages.
  • Proactively identifies community members and groups who have a stake in the outcome of planning decisions, including groups historically under-represented in the decision-making process.
  • Reviews and edits materials of other staff before distribution.
  • Assists web manager with web updates and web design.
  • Ensures presentations and other materials are ADA compliant.
  • Prepares and delivers verbal, written and visual presentations to staff, advisory councils, citizen groups and government officials.
  • Represents Plan Hillsborough at meetings, functions, and events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

What You Need to be Successful

  • Excellent knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; Bi-lingual a plus
  • Considerable knowledge of functions, activities, requirements, procedures, objectives and regulations of event planning and community engagement
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations program management
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms
  • Working knowledge of photographic and audiovisual equipment
  • Proficiency in or ability to learn InDesign or a similar graphics programs (i.e. Canva, Photoshop, Lightroom, Adobe XD, Illustrator, Premiere Rush, and Spark)
  • Proficiency in making presentations to groups
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office/Outlook
  • Skilled in facilitating meetings
  • Ability to be adaptable and detail-oriented
  • Ability to produce quality work with tight or shifting deadlines
  • Ability to collect and organize data and develop presentations
  • Ability to write in-depth technical reports as well as brief synopses and articles
  • Ability to execute and mange various long-term projects while maintaining daily short-term tasks
  • Ability to use considerable initiative, think independently, and exercise sound judgment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others within and outside our organization
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, build goodwill and strengthen external relationships.
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others
