Description
General Description: This is a paraprofessional position. The incumbent performs routine and complex technical tasks to ensure that construction documents comply with the building code and other laws and ordinances.
Organization: The position of Plan Review Technician is part of the Hanover County Career Development Program (CD). The Plan Review Technician Ladder has three levels: Plan Review Technician I, II, and III. Incumbents report to Plan Examiner and supervise no staff.
Essential Functions:
• Reviews construction documents for single-family dwellings, additions, alterations, and accessory structures to ensure compliance with the building code and other related laws / ordinances.
• Documents work and files necessary reports.
• Assists the public with questions regarding the building code and related laws and ordinances.
• Assists the inspection staff with building code interpretation and engineering support.
• Meets with interested parties on job sites to assist with building code interpretation and to resolve problems.
• Assists with field inspections as needed.
• Assists with the development and presentation of training programs related to the building code.
• Performs related work as assigned.

• 30% Field – May work outside in adverse weather conditions.

• Driving, walking, climbing and crawling are necessary to perform essential functions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Requires a thorough knowledge of building construction methods and materials. Must have general knowledge of sound engineering practice in respect to the design and construction of buildings, structures, and systems The ability to read and interpret construction documents quickly and accurately, required. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens, contractors and staff.
Education, Experience and Training: High school diploma or equivalent, required with experience in construction, including progressive responsibility – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Higher levels on the Career Development Ladder require additional education and experience.
Special Conditions:
• Criminal Records Check, including fingerprinting
• Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License
• Certification in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards is required within one year of employment
• Twelve-month probationary period
• Work beyond normal work schedule
