Job Summary:
The primary function of this position is to direct and supervise the operations of the UW-Madison Police Department Dispatch Communications Center. This position is responsible for developing and implementing written directives, scheduling, training, equipment control, evaluating personnel, maintaining communications center resources, discipline, assigning work and providing leadership towards fulfillment of the Department’s Mission and Vision. As a supervisor this person will be expected to coordinate with other work units, supervisors and managers to effectively meet the needs of both internal and external customers.
Responsibilities:
Directs and leads the operations of a 24-hour communication center. Coordinates emergency response communication and/or supervises and trains staff to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. Operates technical equipment and is responsible for updating departmental records and maintaining department budget.
- 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- 20% Develops and administers training programs for unit staff
- 10% Operates police radios, phone consoles, and various equipment and technologies to receive and processes requests and information from institutional affiliates, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies
- 15% Schedules logistics and secures resources for response to emergency incidents for the institution
- 10% Monitors incident documentation and record keeping practices and provides recommendations for improvement to leadership
- 10% May develop and monitor budget for the dispatch center including long range planning for replacement of critical technology
- 15% Required to work special events and assignments as identified by the Division.

Required:
*Minimum of at least 4 years work experience as a law enforcement dispatcher
*Transaction Information for the System Certification (must be able to obtain the certification if not currently certified)
*Experience and familiarity with Computer Aided Dispatch system(s)
*Extensive knowledge of police, fire and/or emergency medical services dispatch procedures
*Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations.
*Must be able to perform all core tasks required of subordinates and periodically undertake dispatching and monitoring of camera and alarm systems.
Preferred:
*Experience with alarm systems
*Experience with camera systems
*Lead work or leadership training
*Experience in training personnel in public safety technology or operations

Work Schedule:
This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The appointed area will have a pre-determined schedule in which the position may be assigned to first, second, or third shift. The schedule may include working weekends and Holidays. The final schedule determined will meet the needs of the Department. Routinely persons in this position will be required to work beyond or outside hours assigned and may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

The Police Dispatch Supervisor is eligible to receive $0.80 per hour for weekend and night differential pay (Night: Monday – Friday 6:00 pm – 6:00 am. Weekend: Friday 6:00 pm – Monday 6:00 am).
If you are a current UWPD employee, your salary will be taken into consideration when setting the salary as a Police Dispatch Supervisor. If your current salary as a sworn law enforcement officer is above the posted minimum, this will be factored into setting the base rate in accordance to UW salary guidelines
