General Description:
This is a dispatcher position for the public safety at a multi-campus college.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules and duties dependent on the needs of the department and/or staff professional development.
Duties and Tasks:
- The dispatcher is often the responsible entity for receiving calls for service and dispatch resources, making appropriate notifications.
- This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, law enforcement, and security operations, linking those in need of assistance to those who render assistance.
Essential Functions:
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications
Required KSAs:
- Ability to successfully complete initial DCJS approved dispatcher/communications training
- Ability to successfully complete department field training
- Ability to acquire and maintain NCIC / VCIN Level A operator certification
- Ability to successfully complete department required or DCJS required in-service training
- Ability to follow instructions and perform with minimum supervision
- Ability to understand and speak English clearly
- Excellent oral (no speech limitations) and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-task various job functions
- Ability to handle stress under emergency situations
- Good computer skill
- Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute
- Ability to successfully complete the written telecommunicator assessment
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
Minimum qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Successfully pass a telecommunications assessment
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years
- Successful completion of a thorough background investigation
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some communications center experience
- APCO Telecommunicator I Certification and/or other APCO certifications
- Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Basic Dispatcher Certification.
- National Criminal Information Center and Virginia Criminal Information Network Certification.
