Organizational Structure/Reporting Relationships:
This position reports directly to the Policy Director and is part of the Public Affairs Team. This position has no direct reports.

Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Policy Director, the Policy Intern supports SIHB’s public policy and advocacy projects that impact the health and well-being of urban American Indian and Alaska Native people. Responsibilities include supporting coordination of policy and advocacy projects ranging from health care and public health systems to social determinants of health. This may include supporting external communications, conducting policy research and analysis, policy monitoring, and assisting in project planning.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct policy research and analysis on American Indian and Alaska Native health and social policy issues;
- Draft comments, letters, presentations, and other visual aids as necessary;
- Monitor local and state legislative and budget processes;
- Support external communications and meetings with tribal, government, and community partners;
- Support the SIHB’s development of policy positions and priorities through research and content drafting; and
- Perform other office tasks associated with projects, such as preparing materials, filing, copying, literature searches, bibliography entries and editing, data entry, taking notes and other administrative tasks.

Knowledge of:
- Participating as part of project teams;
- Health and social issues facing American Indian and Alaska Native people; and,
- Written and oral communication skills.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively;
- Use software programs including Windows and Microsoft products;
- Multi-task and take direction from multiple people;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, superiors, public officials, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and with the general public; and,
- Prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
Background Qualifications
Education
- Must have a high school diploma or GED by position start date
- Undergraduate and Graduate students
Experience
- Familiarity (personal and professional) with health and social issues facing American Indians and Alaska Native people
Other Requirements
Candidates must successfully pass a background check as part of the hiring process
Work Environment
Interns have flexible hours with standard office hours being 7 am – 6 pm, Monday through Friday
NOTE: Estimated hours are 20-30 hours per week. This position is scheduled to end no later than September 30, 2023. Students successful in this position may extend their internship to a later discussed date. This potential end date does not constitute a contract; the SIHB is an at-will employer.
