Job Summary

**This is a seasonal position***

MAJOR FUNCTION: Works as the assistant pool supervisor of county-owned and operated aquatic facilities. Implements and supervises programs at the aquatic facilities. Assists with the daily operation of the aquatic facilities. Reports to the Pool Supervisor, Aquatics Program Supervisor and Aquatics and Safety Coordinator.

Knowledge:

  • Aquatic facility operations, mechanics and chemical balance.
  • Knowledge of aquatic facility programming, safety and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of approved water rescue methods and first aid techniques.

Abilities:

  • Must be able to instruct swimming lessons and to perform as a lifeguard.
  • Must be able to maintain a supervisory relationship with coworkers.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to learn rules and regulations of the pool facility and exercise independent and good judgment in enforcing rules and regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

  • Assist with the management and maintenance of a county aquatic facilities.
  • Supervision of Lifeguards and Pool Attendants in the absence of Pool Supervisor.
  • Be present on Pool deck to observe staff and patrons.
  • First point of contact for lifeguards, swim instructors, pool attendants in absence of Pool Supervisor.
  • Implements and enforces guard rotation schedule in absence of Pool Supervisor.
  • Ensures shifts are covered in the event of a staff members absence.
  • Enforces all rules with patrons.
  • Assign cleaning tasks to staff and assists with cleaning.
  • Approves scholarship applications in the absence of Pool Supervisor.
  • Speaks with patrons, addressing any comment, questions, or concerns.
  • Coach lifeguards, swim instructors and pool attendants the way you expect them to perform.
  • Open communication with Pool Supervisors, Aquatic Program Supervisor, and Aquatics & Safety Coordinator.
  • Fill out Daily Inspection Forms.
  • Submit End of Day Reports to Aquatic Program Supervisor, Aquatics & Safety Coordinator, Supervisors, and Assistant Supervisors
  • Perform routine water management tests to ensure water quality.
  • Assist with implementing aquatic programs and providing recreational swimming opportunities. Assist with collection of fees and ensures the accuracy of the funds.
  • Ensure general safety and maintains cleanliness and appearance of aquatic amenities, to include pool area, restrooms and showers for public use.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules to include evenings, weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Good hand/eye coordination. Good vision and hearing with or without correction. Use of both hands, fingers and legs with dexterity. Very frequent light lifting and carrying (30 lbs. or less) and frequent heaving lifting (up to 75 lbs.), reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting. Constant walking and standing in an outdoor environment. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to perform physical demanding work and maintain high levels of physical fitness and agility and skills competency. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential FUNCTIONS.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Constantly working outside under adverse weather conditions of heat, cold, humidity and rain. Routine work in the sun (sunscreen will be provided).

WORK HAZARDS: Work with chemicals i.e., soda ash, chlorine, muriatic acid used to maintain aquatic facilities and restrooms. Exposure to ultra-violet rays (sunscreen will be provided).

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Ring buoy, shepherd’s crook, whistle, trauma bag (first aid kit, AED, oxygen cylinder, gloves, biohazard bags, etc), rescue tube, back board and handicap lift.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalence of a diploma.

EXPERIENCE: One year experience in aquatic/pool operations. Some supervisory experience preferred. Experience as a lifeguard and water safety instructor required. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for portions of the minimum requirements.

LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: American Red Cross Lifeguard or equivalent, Advanced First Aid, CPR/AED for the professional rescuer, Water Safety Instructor certification required. American Red Cross Lifeguard Management Certification Required within 30 days of employment required. Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
