Power cable engineer

Job Description

Our Transmission & Distribution division provides Cable Engineering expertise for a wide variety of projects at all voltage levels for distribution and transmission systems in the US and abroad.

Due to continued growth, we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Power Cable Engineer to work across our business providing technical leadership. This role will cover both onshore and offshore cabling systems for HVAC and HVDC applications.

Duties will include:

  • Perform high and extra high voltage HVAC/ HVDC underground transmission lines design, including conductor sizing, circuit rating calculations and cable system’s bonding and grounding.
  • Develop cable system construction technical specifications.
  • Develop drawing packages to support the design (route plan and profile, trench cross sections, duct bank designs, key maps, grounding and bonding schematics, etc).
  • Perform EMF studies, constructability reviews and provide technical expertise on cable technology and testing and commissioning.
  • Perform ampacity studies and model underground cables using Cyme, cable vendor documentation, and soil parameters provided by geotechnical team.
  • Prepare CAPEX and OPEX estimates.
  • Review RFP documents and prepare proposals including scope of work documents, budgetary estimates and schedules.
  • Issue Power Cable RFPs, assist with bid evaluations and be responsible for the coordination with cable vendors.
  • Perform work in a technically sound manner and completed in accordance with the Engineering Project Procedures and specific Contract requirements.
  • Effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of personal work activities.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
  • Manage project correspondence and client requests.
  • Continuous improvement of job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary project team.

Candidate Specification

Required Knowledge:

  • Proven track record of underground cable project experience.
  • Detailed understanding of underground high voltage and extra high voltage AC and DC electrical systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of various cable construction types, cable properties and testing and cable monitoring system technology.
  • NESC, NEC, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, ASTM and ASCE standards, and all applicable federal, state, regional, and local laws requirements.
  • Experience working with subcontractors and procurement activities.
  • Experience with Cymcap engineering software for ampacity calculations.
  • Experience working with electrical utility companies and/or private developers.

Preferred Knowledge:
HVDC and related technology knowledge and construction experience.
Education and minimum Experience Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, MS preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience required.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE) or ability to obtain the PE within 1 year.

Salary Range: $90k-$104k
