Power Systems Studies Engineer

We are currently seeking a Power Systems Studies Engineer to help Arup grow its power system studies function in the Americas. You will work with a growing local and global team; aiming to support renewable developers, ISO/RTO, transmission developers, government agencies and utilities. The successful candidate is an aspiring innovative engineer who leaves a strong positive impression on clients. The successful candidate will support the delivery of various power system studies including generation and load interconnection studies, transmission planning studies, transient stability studies and short circuit studies.

We currently have significant international experience in power system studies for renewable projects and major transmission interconnectors and are looking to grow that in the Americas, and particularly in the USA in the next five years. Our growth will be achieved from a combination of delivery of technical excellence, development of select intellectual property and key client relationships on gigawatt scale power developments.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance requirements and/or ISOs’ interconnection or transmission planning guidelines.
  • Ability to execute load flow and steady state studies, evaluation of transfer capability and security limits and short-circuit/fault studies to national and international standards.
  • Ability to conduct transient stability analysis. Experience in EMT studies is considered a plus.
  • Experience in using PSS/E and PowerGEM TARA is required and knowledge of ASPEN OneLiner and PSCAD is considered a plus.
  • Experience in reviewing and modifying steady state PSS/E models as needed for project specific applications.
  • Remain up to date with ISO/RTO shifting market rules associated with system studies, reliability and other interconnection requirements.
  • Assist in developing new automated techniques to optimize the studies work and deliver efficiency and quality.
  • Produce quality technical reports and presentations for both internal and external clients.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, PhD is a plus for this position.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in delivering power system studies using PSS/E, PowerGEM TARA, ASPEN Oneliner and/or PSCAD.

Preferred:

  • Programming skills in Python, VBA and/or MATLAB is highly desirable. Experience developing automation tools for power system studies is considered a plus.
  • PE license and NCEES accreditation for comity to USA states is preferred.
  • Strong technical reporting skills including reporting complex system analysis in a seamless fashion.
  • Excellent communication skills essential for team-based working.
  • Effective presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, as needed, to achieve agreed goals and results.
  • Must be highly motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges.

New York Hiring Range– The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York is $77,300 to $101,000 per year. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of New York will differ.
