Join a fun atmosphere where you can see animals every day, the Virginia Zoo! We seek a part-time, Prep/Line Cook who enjoys working with guests and children. Excellent customer service skills are required!

POSITION PURPOSE

The Prep/Line Cook assists the Lead Cook and Food Service Manager with the cooking and prepping aspects of the culinary program of the Virginia Zoo. The Prep/Line Cook focuses on food preparation, cooking, presentation, and food inventory controls.

JOB-STATUS

This is a non-exempt part-time hourly position. Mostly DAYTIME hours and done by 4:30! There will be limited evening Zoo events, holidays, and weekends are required. This position does not supervise any staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Professionally serve food and provide remarkable customer service on an assigned work shift.
  • Customer Service: Assist in delivering the Zoo’s four core values “Accountability, Innovation, Integrity, and Respect while providing exceptional internal and external customer service. Deliver the highest quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Deliver the highest quality of food safety and cleanliness while delivering customer service to both internal and external customers representing the organization’s standards of employee conduct.
  • Maintains area throughout shift in clean orderly fashion includes setup and breakdown and lobby.
  • Receive, verify, and properly store food, beverages, equipment, and supplies.
  • Conducts opening and closing tasks for various food service and events-related facilities.
  • Prep items effectively and efficiently each day in accordance with prep levels and food safety standards.
  • Assist with set up, serving, and breakdown for catered events.
  • Food Handling Standards: Maintains established safe and compliant health and legal regulations by enforcing sanitation standards and procedures set by the Norfolk health department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • At least one (1) year of fast-paced food service experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and can follow directions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, vendors, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to be dependable and reliable.
  • Can adapt to a routine and procedures while following a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to interact with all staff, volunteers, guests, and animals with respect.
  • Must have a current Food Handlers’ card.

SALARY, SCHEDULE, & BENEFITS

  • Up to $15 per hour, based on experience.
  • Hours vary up to 32 hours per week, 40 per week during peak summer months.
  • Membership, events, and gift shop discounts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to traverse all parts of the restaurant quickly.
  • Prolonged periods of standing.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at times and 50 pounds with assistance.
